Home made fish food.

I make mine out of leftovers from my dads sushi night at the restaurant, its all bacteria free sushi grade. I use:
Ahi Tuna
A Bit of Salmon (This fish is really oily, so not too much)
Octopus
Squid
A Very little bit of uncooked eel, EXTREMELY oily(Only for the Omegas)
Shrimp
I also soften nori, with some selcon or zoe, and then I mash it to a pulp, then add that, I strain out some fresh garlic juice.
Then I add a couple mysis cubes.
Then I use a rather large food processor.
Then To pack it away I bought some egg crate, cut it to size of freezer ziplocs, and spread the food into that, as evenly as possible. I have yet to feed this "new blend" but this is tailored to both my tanks.
However, I do use sushi roe (fish eggs) to feed my mandarin, he absolutely loves it. Only the orange variety mind.

This would be expensive, except for the fact that its usually made out of the not so nice parts of the filet of tuna or salmon, or scraps that are too small to be made into sushi.

I made fish food using Beth's recipe here on SWF. The fish love it and totally scarf on it. In addition to this food, I also supplement with mysis, krill and chopped bits of any fresh seafood that I buy and prepare for our own dinner. It doesn't hurt to share! Now that we have a few corals in our tank, I'm planning on making homemade coral food using Eric Borneman's recipe in his book, Aquarium Corals. Fish and corals can chow down on both the fish and coral versions of homemade food. One batch of homemade food lasts a LONG time so I definitely think it's cheaper for the wallet and healthier for the fish and corals too, especially since you can vary up what goes into your food depending on what's in your tank.

Can the food be cooked? I was at Wally World today, and they had this cooked mixture of squid, octopus, crab, and shrimp. Guess it's for a seadfood salad or maybe sushi.

mine was pretty simple i took some sheets of nori, crushed up garlic clove for the juice, fresh shrimp, scallops, and squidd, also 4 or 5 flakes of formula 1or2 that i had left over can't remember which. Anyways the fresh seafood i got a little cup full from the store of each kind. Took all of above ingredients put in a little food processor and chopped it up rolled it out on some wax paper. Then put it in the freezer. After frozen cut it into bigger squares and put them in sandwhich bags and put in freezer to keep. All i do is break a little chunk off let it thaw in cup of tank water and feed with a turkey baster.
reef your first bag in that link looks exactly like mine

The recipes above are all good, but they lack one thing IMHO. I make food with whatever is available (shrimp, clams, fish heads, etc), run it through the blender, then mix it with Knox Gelatin. This binds the food together so there is less fouling of the tank - the fish see intact pieces, not a fog of small fishy stuff floating in the water.

well mine isn't blended and w/ food processor when i dissolve it there are small chunks its not chopped enough to be a paste. not saying you have a bad idea i just don't see the need for it w/ my food.

Sorry in the delay, I just revisited this post, what in rod's food would would you not feed your fish? Shrimp, Scallop, Oyster, Clam, Squid, Octopus, Brine, Krill, Mysis, Grouper (or perch), Red Nori, green Nori, Broccoli, carrot, Frozen red plankton, Golden pearl (7 sizes), DTs Oyster eggs, Selco, Fresh hatched brine, Freshly harvested rotifers? And if you can tell me where to get this stuff cheap enough to make it worth my while let me know....until then i will stick with Rod's food which has a proven track record.
