How long can Bang hold out...?

This is my own personal opinion and there is no real scientific data behind it but, it it ain't broke - don't fix it. If it is not too much trouble feeding them in the cage in the tank, then leave them there. You don't need your wife stressing over taking care of two tanks and have her worry about what to do if something goes wrong. Move them when you get back.
Of course now that I have said that I am sure that you did the water change and moved them this morning.

No, I haven't moved them. I think I'll go ahead and do the water change tonight in the 55, but you are right. They are alive so I'll just leave them where they are until I get back and see how they are. They are still tiny, but they will eventually get tired of that small box. I have started to notice that a few of the larger ones are taking on a dominant personality and pretending to "nip" at some of the smaller ones.

Update:
Due to all the rain in the area, my backpacking trip got canceled, but unfortunately, there's no babies left to care for. Over the past couple of days they really started showing signs of weakening (falling down to the bottom and just moving sporadically). One by one this continued until I was down to 4 or 5 tonight. I finally said forget it, and just released the rest of them into the tank. A couple of them headed towards the rocks, and Mom scooped one up in her mouth (not sure if it was a snack, or maybe a maternal thing, protecting him).
Anyway, the fiasco is over with. As stated in the beginning...I was not set up to deal with this properly, but I tried. I learned a lot about the process, made some mental notes, and have a better idea of what to expect if it happens again. I hear that once they start, it happens right often.
I will say that I found it harder than I expected to deal with the dying fish. You have all had fish die, so you know the gut churn feeling? Well, having it happen about 40 times is no easier. I thought it would be no big deal being a bunch of tiny fry, but no, you could see the suffering. It's not easy.

Well, it's been 6 months, and here we ago again. Male Bang has had a mouth full for 20 days now, so it should be soon.
As before, I'm still not set up to keep these buggers alive. I may try again, but the outcome will probably be the same.
Wish me luck....

Good luck!
Thanks. I think I may have miscalculated the date because last night, several of the babies were trying to swim out of his mouth. They would get about 3/4 of the way out, then he would take a big gulp and suck them back in. He can't take this much longer so I suspect he will spit them out today or tomorrow...

Good news / Bad news....
Good = Babies arrived

Bad = Must have been while I was at work, so they all became fish food

Papa has definately spit them out, but no trace of them anywhere. He sure was hungry though, after not eating for 20 + days.

Ready for round 3

Noticed papa late last week quit eating. Further studying reveals another mouthful of eggs. Here we go again...

Possibly...at the very least, my lfs owner really wants them. She is set up for breeding so she will take them right from the get go, IF I am home this time when he spits them out.

Can you take him out, and put him in a qt or something...
That's what I use to do with my cichlids when they had eggs in their mouths...

No, I don't even have a qt setup now days. I do still have the little breeder box though that I used the first time. I wrote down the date that he stopped eating though, so I will watch him a little closer this time as we get near the time.
