Some articles to consider:

If you think that suddenly something like ethanol would be cheaper, why? There are "big corn" interests there too...if it is all "evil oil" then there will be "evil corn" where ever there is money to be made, just like "evil" drug companies that make profits. Everybody is in marketing.
But here in Texas there are HUGE trucks and SUVS all over the place. Many people talk the talk but....

And there is always uncle Sam in the pocket -

Corn is only one source of ethanol. Ethanol can be made from a variey of sources besides corn, for example, barley and wheat. Ethanol can also be produced from trees and grasses it's called bioethanol. Ethanol is most commonly used to increase octane and improve the emissions quality of gasoline. There are also several other types of alcohol but ethanol is most commonly used for fuel.
http://www.eere.energy.gov/afdc/altfuel/ethanol.html
"Ethanol can be blended with gasoline to create E85, a blend of 85% ethanol and 15% gasoline. E85 and blends with even higher concentrations of ethanol, E95, for example, qualify as alternative fuels under the Energy Policy Act of 1992 (EPAct). "
The reason ethanol isnt as widely promoted is because the peteroleum industry dosent profit from it like gasoline and hasnt found a way to control it like oil. They also like to debunk it with false claims so that they can continue to control the market.

Ethanol can be produced very easily and cheaply in a garage and it's completely legal and dosent cost anywhere near what the link said. Just ask someone who runs it. Of course if you have someone else do it for you, they could charge anything, like big oil does. The difference is that the average consumer cannot refine gasoline at home, but can make ethanol or biodiesel. Im not talking about a Moonshine still, it must be denatured (made poisonous for consumption). This would effectively remove the dependence on big industry to produce it and all of the fees and taxes that go along with it. If you can maintain a reef tank you can make ethanol. $7.87 a gallon for ethanol or $3.00 for seawater  , thats interesting...realistically I think both can be made for less.

They profit so much off of gas at the end of each year I can't believe they can't cut the prices down. They'll still make a huge profit even if it was $1.50/gal. What could "we" as a whole do to stop this from happening? Just curious

Be glad cars don't run on McDonalds Cheeseburgers or Starbux Coffee, both companies make nearly ten times the return on their investment that "Big Oil" does. The oil companies have a lot more in profits dollar wise but their investment to make that profit was a lot bigger too.

It’s sad but a fact. We the people and consumer just have to suck it up and deal with it. Yes true some will go alternative fuel but most Americans we just talk about change never really enforce change. If you want change DON’T TALK ABOUT IT BE ABOUT IT. But like everything else we will forget about this problem. As we pay 3.00 a gallon for a while prices will drop back to a 1.50 and WE ALL will breath a sigh of relief. When in fact the gas company pulled the wool over our eyes again. They have what you need. Want it pay for it, that's their attitude Just before the hurricanes gas was only what 1.09 a gallon. But hey 1.50 a gallon is better then 3.00

Many folks dont remember this but when Ronald Reagan was president the Arabian oil compaines tried to repeat what they did to us in the 70s and what they are trying to do us again now with oil pricing? Ronald Regan told these companies that the United States was going to step up oil exploration in Alaska, at the mere suggestion of this the oil prices dropped over 20% in a matter of days. Because they knew we had the technology and funding to do it. Its based of the law of supply and demand. If the demand is there they will continue to gouge us.
Oil is a finite resource that will eventually run out. We need to move forward and look at alternatives instead of trying to jockey the price around for this outdated resource. I have this old Toyota truck with a Chevy V8 I put in it several years ago, its got a 600 cfm Edelbrock carb. Holly makes an alky carb Im going to install and try out. Will have to mill the heads to raise the comp ratio and play with the timing a little but that should be the most of it. The sprint racers have been doing this for years so I think I can do it for reasonably cheap. Fuel injection isnt that difficult either. Im confident in my ability to convert it but would like to hear from anyone who has done this conversion before to their own vehicle?

It is 2.89 here. I drive a Honda Civic during the week and a Expedition on the weekends. But lately the Expedition is staying parked. LOL :joy:

Four bucks is my limit, at that point Im switching to ethanol and the gas companies can kiss my wrasse. Its pretty easy to convert a gasoline engine to ethanol and a diesel to biodiesel/vegetable oil so have been considering a diesel also. The country of Brazil dosent even use gasoline. The bicycle has been getting some miles lately.

Just would like to point out, the country of Brazil used 1.61 million bbl of oil per day in 2004. When did they become oil free?
Not to mention they have half the population, with only 1/3 of their families in that population owning a vehicle. So if what you say is true, it is much easier for them to supply an ethanol fuel to the masses than it would be here.
Ethanol, (from my understanding) is basically like grain alcohol......
how much does a bottle of vodka cost without the taxes on it?
Carry on..........
