Not to mention they have half the population, with only 1/3 of their families in that population owning a vehicle. So if what you say is true, it is much easier for them to supply an ethanol fuel to the masses than it would be here.
Ethanol, (from my understanding) is basically like grain alcohol......
how much does a bottle of vodka cost without the taxes on it?
Carry on..........
Cmon Darth... are you serious? Vodka :hilarious might as well compair Badger milk, and where did you get Brazil being oil free :notsure: , they dont use gasoline to power their vehicles but Im sure somewhere in the country of Brazil crude oil is used? probably as a crankcase lubricant for ethanol burning engines :hilarious and Vodka is not made with denatured alcohol either. Otherwise you would go blind from drinking it. :hilarious
The US has more farmland than Brazil and often supplies the rest of the world with many types of grain. If we wanted, the US could easily pump E85 or biodiesel instead of gasoline, remember ... Gasahol. Even hydrogen when stored in a hydride format is promising.
Once again Ethanol can be made by the average consumer in a garage, gasoline cannot, so the analogy does not apply, keep researching eventually you will dispell your own myths, answer your own questions and realize that gasoline is not the future. E85 or pure ethanol is not a cure all, IMO it just a cheaper and better alternative to gasoline for the time being. We have to look at alternatives.
Wonder what some of the peteroleum stocks are going for nowdays.
Carry on... :hilarious ... more like carry an extra large wallet if your going to continue to use gasoline, please dont thrash me with your light sabre.

Just a quick clarifier: ethanol is 100% alcohol made in a distillery, not the same "ethanol" people talk about as an automotive fuel source. When people say "ethanol" they are usually talking about E85 and E10. E85 is 85% ethanol, 15% gasoline. E10 is 10% gasoline, 90% ethanol. E10 can be used in almost every single US automobile currently on the road. This is the "gasohol" you've heard of, which made a brief appearance at some pumps in the '80's. The ethanol in E85 can be made from corn, cellulose, sweetgrass (and a couple other sources I think) so it's production is pretty flexible. Although there seems to be a big push by automakers for the sale of new flexible fuel vehicles that can burn E85, E85 is pretty hard to find right now. There are websites that allow you to plug in your zip code or state to find E85 fueling stations...and they are pretty scarce (some states having none at all). So I think it's safe to say we have a long road ahead of us before we relieve any of our oil dependency burdens.
Brazil does use gasoline, the govt. discourages it, and the country uses very little. Their main source of auto fuel is E85. The govt. there has spent the last 20 years trying to make it their main automotive fuel source. If you travel there and rent a car, they offer a nice, low priced, flexible fuel vehicle or an older, exspensive, gasoline only vehicle.

Brazil is 100 percent self sufficient according to bill oreilly, they use there own sugar cane to support themselves, we the people control our own gas prices, if we dont buy, it goes down, if we buy more and more it goes up, its common sense, the price of oil does not need to be at 75 bucks a barrel it needs to be around 30-40 and even lower, opeq has us by our nu** and we can control them not the other way around. so stand up for yourself and dont let them control us, we need to demand lower prices.

to chime in on the "alternative fuel source" part of this thread... this is a capitolist nation... if everyone is screaming for ethonol... do you think the producers of these fuels will give us a break???
the way i look at it... they would ra%e us too... anything for the all mighty dollar... and when the people are paying the $$$ there is some greedy b@$#@rd waiting to reep the rewards...
do you think any of us can not only get a cost of living raise but a cost of gas/commute raise??? hmmmm... i am living a dream...

I totally agree. Until people stop driving their big SUV's, I am not going to take them seriously when they complain about paying gas prices. To drive a car like that is ridiculous. I drive a Honda Civic and even with rising gas prices, a fill up for me is only about $25. And then on top of that, I get around 250-300 miles on a tank of gas.
Phixer, you really seem to know what you are talkin about here. Keep up with the interesting and intelligent posts.

This strikes me as odd. Remember how everyone comments on how the oil prices are Bush helping out his Saudi arabian friends.
Take a look at the top 5 countries that import oil to the U.S.
The top sources of US crude oil imports for February were Mexico (1.774 million barrels per day), Canada (1.700 million barrels per day), Saudi Arabia (1.418 million barrels per day), Nigeria (1.342 million barrels per day), and Venezuela (1.175 million barrels per day).
Mexico and Canada!!!!!!

Something needs to be done. I'm actually thinking about getting a bullet bike. I found that a payment on a bike with insurance and gas is gonna be cheaper then what i spend a month on gas. I also drive a 4 cyl right now it's turbo so it only gets maybe 19 mpg. Sucks bad but it's not a v8 i feel sorry for you guys.

I never said gasoline was the future.
Just that people make comparisons about other countries being gasoline free is ridiculous. That is close to the same comparisons many made between the communist USSR in the 1980's, and the USA. Stating the USSR is making communism work, we should also use it.
And if it is so easy to make, why haven't you converted yet and still complaining about gas prices?
