I'm in no rush to break the tank down. I'm going to wait and see how long it takes for my sick benifits to kick in and how much that is.
Hey Reefraff, they do indeed tax sickness benifits. It is supposed to pay out 80% of my net income wages...LOL...Then they tax it. The Disability money I'm not worried about, all will be good in the world once I have my disability coming in..
MPROCTOR4, Making my own sea food to cut up for food is more expensive than purchasing the mysis shrimp in frozen cubes, I package lasts a week for $4.99..The phytoplankton, mico vert and such is near $20.00 a bottle. It is better for the fish I admit, but it won't feed the corals..
Dunno about "sickness benefits". Just thinking long term. I ASSUME rail road disability is treated like Social Security benefits so if that's the case you won't be taxed on that once it kicks in.

Correct. I was told that if all goes smoothly (I dare not count on it) I should have RR benefits by Oct. 1[sup]st[/sup] of this year. Until then I have only the sickness benefits and right now I need a skimmer on the seahorse tank, which I dare not spend $300.00 on.
The reef needs a 37g water change minimum, two cubes of food, with the SHs that makes me needing a full package a week + chunks of shrimp. A bucket of slat last 1 month.

So I will break down the reef tank for now, any corals that can live with the horses will go in there, I have already added a green button polyp and loaded green stripe mushroom rock. It looks so big in the 30g from the 90g. I have two rocks with GSPs but I think they are too large, one is flat and might be able to be set on an edge, but I don’t know if it will get enough light, but one is way too big.

Also snails can go in the SH tank too, it needs a water change of only 10g, the horses eat about 2 cubes each day, a package will go for two weeks instead of one and I don’t need to get any raw shrimp. I can use the skimmer from the reef tank. Then once benefits kick in I can set it back up.

The two 37g water changing cans will house the rock and I have about six empty salt buckets for the sand. I won’t even remove the tank and stand out of the house, just let it sit empty until I can start it up again. It will be a very long 7 months…but it will give me motivation and ideas of any changes I want to make before then, like a rock wall and such. So that’s my plan.

90g tank needs 30gs to be a 3% change...my plastic WC can is 37g...I fill it to the rim just about and that is my water change which should be 2Xs a month, I have been doing once a month and I still have nitrates 5 - 10 no matter what.
Can it go in a sump? I have no room in the tank.
I don't have $59.00 for a skimmer that may not work and to be honest....I have not found a skimmer that works except the octo one in my 90g sump. HOB or those cheap crap things for nano tanks are worthless. The last one I had was part of a HOB pump and it didn't skim not one drop in a month...I removed it..I paid $60.00 for it. Life with fish would be so much easier and cheaper if the equipment would actually do what it should.

LOL....Flower so far it works....it is an internal skimmer.....REMEMBER...HENRY recommended it....HENRY uses this...LOL...that was enough for me
IDK if it can go in a sump....I would guess as long as it is in the water
Ask Henry
I do maybe 40G w/c's in my 225G every other week (MAYBE) I am late right now.....I think you could do a little less on the w/c, and spread them out.....just feed a little less too....
just food for thought

i am just wondering what do you need for 6 months to keep the 90 going?if you kept the 90 going do you still need a skimmer for the other tank?i would think some salt ,food a skimmer for the other tank and maybe a test kit.would that do it?

It Really doesn't sound like much does it? Until you add it up. I do the house budget, and I know exactly what is being spent....Xs 7..Here is what I see.
37g water changes and keeping up on the SH tank 10g = ( with what I have right now and about to be empty) means $60.00 a month on salt and it adds up to $420.00
Skimmer cheapest = $300.00
Fish food (basic mysis shrimp only = $5.00 a pack that lasts 1 week) I need 5 for a month = 25 packs X7= $175.00
Test Kit (you are right, in 7 months I will need another master kit of reef and saltwater to have all the tests I need API = $60.00 each totals $120.00
420.00
300.00
175.00
120.00
$1015.00 What I need to keep the reef and the SH tank for 7 months. If no emergency issues come up.
Now if I break down the reef, and use that skimmer on the SH tank....
Test kits $120.00
Bucket of salt $60.00 (with the bucket I have right now and buy one more)
Food ....1 pack lasts 2 weeks, each pack costs $5.00 each, so I will need 3 packs for a month with a few cubes left over, so by the end of 7 months I may have enough to shave off another 2 weeks, but being generous and straight forward = 21 packs X7 = $147.00
120.00
60.00
147.00

$337.00 What I need to run the SH tank only, if no emergancy issues come up.
Buying online I might be able to get salt a little cheaper, lets say $40.00 a bucket that's still $280.00. That means I may be able to shave off a whole $140.00 from the $1015.00, that is still $875.00 to keep the reef instead of the SH tank only for $337.00. That's a $538.00 savings
My MHs on my reef tank only has one side functioning...that needs repair as well.

Test kits I did find online w/shipping $30.36 By my house LFS Its $58.?? (rounded to $60.00 in my totals)
Salt here is from $55.00 to $74.00 depends on the store, online I can order it for $49.99 not that much cheaper online w/free shipping, but $10.00 is $10.00...The food online is $5.13 then add shipping...it's cheaper here at my LFS for $4.99 a pack.
I paid $284.99 for the skimmer I want..then add shipping. I won't need this purchase if I run the SH tank only.
So using the internet and keeping only the 30g going
60.00 Master Saltwater and a reef Test kits
50.00 Bucket of salt
147.00 7 months of food
$257.00
So by ordering online I can save close to $100.00

It's the monthly salt buckets, needing a skimmer for the SH tank, and fixing the lights that put the reef out of commission for the duration.
