i wouldn't think trates are going to be an issue, unless over 100 (i believe).
Ren, you know I love ya, but where did this number come from? Nitrates above 20 are harmful to fish, but to be honest they start showing stress at 60. Tangs would not be comfortable in more than 40.

sry just reread some posts, how on earth do you have 200lbs of rock in a 75? there can't be any room for the fish to swim in... do you have dead spots that could be preventing nitrification of ammonia? 1200gph really isn't enough flow to get the water moving all around that rock. plus, that only leaves you with about 50 gallons of water between the tank and sump. what pump is in your sump?

Hello..................S.G. is NOT high. I have tangs in my reef at 1.027. NOT a factor AT ALL, unless the LFS water was at 1.009, which I would believe.

quickest reference i can find is new marine aquarium pg 129 nitrates of 50 are fine in a FO. i could swear i've seen 100 as being bad for FO i'll look some more :)

I agree that 1.027 is not high and would not be an issue for tangs. I am interested in the rest of the readings. Acclimation would play a huge part in this.

Very carefully, they are weird shaped and most of them stand up. there is some base in there too.. if you look on some of my older posts, you will see my tank.. i have 150 in main tank and 50 in 40 gallon refug. i have a 600 gph in the return. there is plenty of room in the tank.. just look how i got it all placed.. the one on the left corner alone weighed in at 60 lbs, then the 2 peices in the middle are a combined weight of 40lbs. BIG ROCKS. Right now i have a small dead spot in the front of the tank, i will be readjusting the powerheads for better flow

kk looked at your post from july 18 (nice idea on foil, sorta different). problem with big rocks is the handling of ammonia is very small due to lower surface area per lb of rock. the water can't get through to filter it correctly.
what test kit do you use for ammonia?

Do you have pics of your tank now? Rock isn't the issue here. I have 40lbs in my 20gallon qt while I re-set up my display. Your nitrates are at 5?

ehh, he says it starts getting dangerous at 80, i said deadly at 100, book says ok at 50... i'm still trying to find out where i read it, i'm tired lol and had a long day.

my first thoughts are the TDS readings...200....they should be between 0-15 or so...so wouldnt this have some effect to what the actually parameters are as well?
i dont think i read this, but i may have missed it...just out of curiosity are you having any algae problems etc?
you said you did a water change three days ago...possibly were the readings higher before the change?
also what test kits like above mentioned...i know salifert has been having some probs lately...

it may not be a bad idea to make it smaller pieces, plus it allows room for the fish to swim through the rocks and allows better filtration, but like sep says, it may not be the rock.
how new is the test kit?
what about my other questions?
