I feel insulted today at my lfs....

I was at my lfs i spotted a dwarf lion fish that was 29.99 so i politely ask the owner if i could it for $25 cash because thats all i had on me and plus there will be no transaction fee for her. Her replied was " are you kidding that fish is only 29.99 i could see if it was a 50 dollars fish" she was laughing under her throat while she was replying. I just walk out and didn't say bye or thanks do to her rudeness. I also buy fish product from her almost every weekend but now never again....

i am not complaining on the price is the customer service. All she had to say was that i can' t sell it at that price versus laughing at my face.

Maybe she felt insulted. Either way sounds like both sides overreacted if that's the only reason you won't go back.

I think it was a little rude. Yes, they get annoyed by customers trying to {edit} them down, but if the conversation transpired as you depicted, then I would say that was insulting.

What is insulting is a two way street sometimes. That is a good price for the fish I think and it is hard enough for them to make a buck as is, IMO. So it is very possible she was insulted and the "laughing under her breath" was a "I can't believe this!" sort of thing. %% I saw a lot of customer rudeness working at an LFS so it is hard to know what really happened in terms of tone, context, etc.

if you don't have the money to buy it thennnnnnnnn you don't have the money. most fish stores are privately owned (not chain stores) so she was probably just as insulted, they buy their fish and try to make money back, not give people deals because they don't have enough money.

Compare lionfish prices online. $30 is a bargain. She was probably a little ticked off and the giggle was a nervous way of trying not to show it. I sold a truck once that was in great shape and I had done a bunch of work on it and it was a bargain price just to get rid of it so I could move. Some guy comes by and asks how low I'd go. I was insulted and nearly yelled at him to get off my property. So I laughed and said the price on the windshield. He went ahead and bought it and said it was a great deal. Then why try to insult me by offering less? Same situation.

All of you are missing the point....The PRICE of the fish was not an issue

He could be a millionair for all we know, the issue was the response. Although I personally cannot stand people who {EDIT} me down on a sale, there is a known fact that...IF YOU DON'T ASK, YOU WILL NOT RECEIVE. It is a documented proof that people who simply "ASK" this question, more often than not, get a discount over everyone else.

I still believe that the response was rude as an employee. You learn a more tactful way to say NO, and then you usually still make the sale and not piss off a customer as in this case.

Unfortunately we do not know the context and tone, and so I won't toss the LFS out as the one to take all the blame....JMO but I have learned that even in speaking to people one on one, I often don't have the whole story. I have one person's perspective on the story, and usually we want people to back us up.
For example, I take your first line as a bit insulting..."all of us are missing the point"
In fact, I understand the point. But the price of the fish is, IMO, a confounding factor in this discussion. I doubt you intended to be rude, but in the absence of tone and context, your response could be taken as insulting. So basically I try and remain somewhat objective. Rudeness, insults, etc are two way streets. the most you can do in this situation is try and understand the fact...which is the cost of the fish, IMO
But we could go on and on with this
it happens all the time on the boards! We just need to keep it all in perspective.

You are right on point! I could not tell you how many times I ask for things cheaper than listed. If you are insulted dont take my money and I will go spend it somewhere else. I work construction and people try to talk me down as well. You get what you can, the money is better in my pocket than yours. I dont believe I have ever heard the term "chew"

I totally know what you mean by if she feel that she was insulted but on a professional level she could said a well prospective manner as a owner. On my 2 cents

T316 I am not trying to tell you guys take my side and truhfully i would have came back if she wasn't rude because 5 dollars ain't really nothing to me. i just happen to have 25 in my pocket at he moment. But I felt she could had made a sell if her respond was much more polite. From this i learn that this lady is all about her money there are time if i buy her product and the total was 58.85 i would give her 60.00 and tell her keep the change. life is learning experience.....

Well it did sound like 5 bucks meant something, and even if you gave her a tip it doesn't mean she owes you anything for it in the future otherwise it's not a tip.
She probably reacted wrong... but maybe you rubbed her the wrong way too. I had a guy I sold some corals too and he kept trying to wheel and deal. I gave him a really good deal and he kept wheeling and dealing to the point where I wish I would have never met him. Then he kept being pushy with emails and calls wanting my corals from my display tank for practically nothing. He probably didn't think he was doing anything wrong but it REALLY rubbed me the wrong way but I held my tongue and completely ignored him at that point.
So... maybe you offended her first or she had a bad day. Sounds like you were satisfied in the past.

I know she doesn't owe me anything it was a personal choice to leave her a tip and i don't expect her give me back anything from the past. My point was she could a sell if she wasn't rude.
