the coral itself - only the parasite living in the water can be transferred.
the rock the coral is on - the cystic stage may be present on the rock or other parts other than the coral.
i've been trying to figure it out myself as to what i should do for my next build. looks like ill have two tanks smh.
I understand that point and thank you. Did not know if it wiuld hide on the coral or the rock. For example, a clam. Most of us know that the clam takes in water. so.... if the clam is in infected water and one sells it to another person and they place that clam in their beautiful uninfected water and that clam expells the infected water inside the new environment, is there or could there be ich in the clam or now in the new aqurium?

yes, that is a possibility.
as for clams, they should be quaranteed due to pyramid snails for 6-8 weeks as well

indeed. this is the part that sucks about the hobby
after ALL of the reading and studying of this subject and others in my tank, I've learned that if the fish have a strong immune system they can fight off the parasite, i have learned that too from experience, but when is to much foe them when you lose the fish to parasite? Two, there are diifferent strands of this parasite and much like the bugs we get, the parasite can adapt. so, next time, and I'm sure there will be, I will copper tx the fish, but will use the the less abbrasive (non ionic) form.

Papa Spanko, we have just recently started QT almost everything. I had put everything in hypo in the big tank and QT new fish arrivals and the ick came back, so had to repeat the entire process. Either the ick wasn't gone in the first place or it came in on a coral/invertebrate. who knows. A couple of weeks ago I did break the golden rule and added a toadstool leather to my tank without QT because it wouldn't fit in the QT tank. I took water from my DT into a 5 gallon bucket and rinsed it well, did this 3 different times. I am praying it was enough and I am not sure I would do it again. I seriously had heart palpitations after putting it in there. Yesterday I saw one spot on my sailfin tang and he was scratching on a rock, I was thinking then it was a big mistake. Luckily the spot is gone and everyone is acting normal, I regret doing that now though. I haven't added any snails since this ordeal started but I need a few more and yes, they will be QT.
Our house looks like a fish store right now! We have one QT tank under the 120g in the dining room, the 56g is in between the dining room/family room and the biocube is across the room from that + we have 4 freshwater tanks upstairs! (children's tanks and one on Keith's nightstand) It is getting ridiculous!! My original plan when getting Keith the 56 for Christmas was that we would take the biocube down. Then the plan changed to a temporary QT tank until both DTs went thru hypo, then take the biocube down. Apparently now the plan is to turn it into a sea horse tank. The never ending tank..........although I must admit, I really like sea horses. At least I don't have to take care of it. Ohhh....we also have a large tank with a snake in it. 2 dogs the size of horses, a cat, and a hedgehog that stays here when my daughter's father is out of town. I do love all the animals, but we need a bigger house. We would probably just fill that up too--lol. My dream is to merge all the tanks together into a 400g and get rid of the rest ,I'm betting all the other tanks would remain.

Spanko, the wetwebmedia link you posted is a another important issue as well and very informative. We do need to QT corals for the "bugs" they carry that we can see, but even longer if trying to let parasites die off. This is where we are failing now.........the 2 QT tanks are full of fish so all of the new coral arrivals having been going into Keith's 56g to remain fallow. We have been dipping in iodine prior to placing them there but I'm sure the potential for infecting the tank with other nasty things is a possibility.

i have found that many many hobbyists accept ich as a fact of the hobby and rely on reducing the stress of the fish. as you stated earlier, they can fight off the infection and build immunity (partial or full). it has been hypothesized that after a year of no introduction of another strain, the one present in the tank will wear itseslf out to levels deemed harmless.

nikeSB--I have heard that as well. I am in complete agreement that fish with a healthy immune system can often fight it off but I'm not so sure that the parasite can ever be at a completely harmless level. The reason I am saying that is because my dad had a large saltwater tank for over 20 years. He very rarely added fish (because they very rarely died), on a couple of occasions he went 2-3 years without adding any fish and as soon as he did, he had an outbreak of ick. It is possible that the new fish was carrying a different strain of ick but I doubt very much that every fish he added had a different strain
It just always seemed to me (for whatever that is worth) that the ick was dorminant until a new stressor was added. That would be an interesting study.

think of it this way. theres the flu, and theres tons of strains. some are milder than others, and others like the bird flu kill over 75% of the time.
i've been through 3 major ich waves in my years of the hobby (14 now).
1st wave, ****** wiped out all fishes within a week i had in my tank (foxface, yellow tang, clown, blenny)
2nd wave, cypto killed 70% of my fishes over 2 weeks (new clown and wrasse made it out alive)
3rd wave (most recent) - ich appeared on my flame wrasses and infected my cryptic six line. showed signs for days, went away, came back after temp shock and all 3 made it out alive. none appeared to ever stress during the attack. been 2 months now with no ich

Honestly, if the only tank we had was the biocube, we probably wouldn't be QT either.
What is AEFW? I am still new to the coral world.

acropora eating flatworms. they can definately cause major devastation if not prevented from getting into an aquarium. for sps people like me, these things are a nightmare
