I'm out.

I sold my live rock today. The past couple of weeks I've been selling my fish and coral. I can no longer afford this hobby and I am in need of money. I still have a freshwater tank but as we all know it isn't the same. I am putting a bunch of my saltwater stuff into the fresh tank and selling the rest. I can make a little money this way and still have the satisfaction of fish. No more coral though

I have a job already locked in place this summer so I can make a few dollars. I DEFNITELY am going to get back in this hobby later in life. I'll probably set up a huge tank and get that ray I've wanted since I saw one for the first time at six years of age.
I will still frequent the forum because I find nothing in life more fascinating and I've come to the conclusion that I like the idea of maintaining a saltwater aquarium and the knowledge that goes with it more than I actually like the practice of keeping one.
Well anyway. I have to try and sell this skimmer and light.

Sorry to hear you are getting out of swf keeping. I hope that you continue to participate in these forums as I find your posts a mixture of insightful and humrous.

Thanks guys. As of right now this hobby still really holds my interest...despite the fact that I don't have a tank.
It's funny. In the last couple of days of getting my freshwater tank ready, I have done more saltwater research than freshwater research.
By the way I'm surprised that this thread has already gotten more hits than my holocaust thread.

Sorry, Pez. I definitely understand the expensive part. You can have a very beautiful FW tank. Lots of plants, and a bubble curtain on the back wall is always nice.
Glad your not leaving us. See ya around!

Pez don't take anything from a saltwater tank and put it in a freshwater tank, not even a decoration.
Once something has been used for saltwater you can't use for fresh anymore. I don't remmber why, it is a rule I was told years ago, so do some research if you feel you need to find out why..I sort of would like to know myself.
sorry to hear you have to give it up for now.

I can't think of any logical reason why you couldn't put something that has been in a saltwater tank into a freshwater tank.

Saltwater poisons the freshwater, anything in a saltwater tank gets the salt absorbed into it and it realeases slow and kills the freshwater fish...I don't know why.

The amount of salt that would actually be absorbed would be so minimal. Salt doesn't poison freshwater fish. Many people add low levels of salt to freshwater tanks to help with disease prevention.

I've never heard that either. Sounds like another myth in the making.

Sounds like a myth to me too. And I don't mean to be harsh, but myths are perpetuated when people repeat stuff they think they heard years ago but don't know why it is.

I know, and I have used salt as medicine. I also was told to never ever use something from a saltwater tank for a freshwater one, it will kill the fish... I don't know why. The above is why I assumed so.
I have to go to work, I wll try and research to find the answer tomorrow when I get home. If I can find this post again.

It is a myth. I go to a fish store and say, "I'm setting up a freshwater tank." Their first instinct is to sell me as much stuff as possible. I explain that I already have a filter, a tank, a light, a heater, powerheads, etc...and they don't like that. They then proceed to tell me that this stuff is completely useless and that I need to buy new stuff. If I accept this lie, then they get more business. My tank reads .5 ppt of salt. I'm working on diluting it. I think I may just cycle the tank and then do an enormous water change to kill both nitrates and salt with one stone. Now using live rock and sand in a freshwater aquarium may be where the misconception originated. If you used live rock in a freshwater aquarium, aside from the amount of salt that would cause damage, all of the die off would cause an almost never ending amount of ammonia. In addition, the pH may become too high.
If I'm incapable of keeping a fish alive, I'll be sure to tell you guys...then I'll either sprout wings or ride a unicorn to the fish store to buy some salt and start a brackish tank.
That reminds me. I have to get a pH test kit for freshwater tomorrow. I hope my reading doesn't hit 8.2...I'll be very, very angry.
I don't care if you're right just NEVER spread a piece of advice unless you have experience with it first hand or have logic to back it up.

I started a freshwater tank in October and 100% of the equipment was used in a saltwater tank, including the tank. Not just saltwater equipment but old saltwater equipment.
It looks OK to me so far, what do you think?

Considering the fact that the Discus look incredibly happy, I would have to agree that it is doing pretty well.
That is a beautiful tank. I am probably going to go planted as well since I have the lighting for it. Are you running CO2?
I literally like everything about that tank.

I've rigged up an old calcium reactor to dose CO2 when needed. I haven't needed it yet though.
There's a square piece of shale in the right side stack that I don't like. I don't think it fits in with the rest of the pieces. Oh, the shale was also in a saltwater tank. Some of the coralline hasn't dissolved completely yet, maybe a couple more months. (see pic)
I don't like the background. I'm hoping I can get it to fill in with plants to hide it.
And a better shot of the Discus.
