Inhabitants for a 40"x40"x24" tank

Custom tank? That's an interesting size.
2 Clownfish
1 Dwarf Angel- a smaller species such as the Coral Beauty (or something of comparible size)
1 Goby
1 Blenny
3 Some sort of schooler meant for smaller tanks such as Green Chromis, Firefish or Cardinals?
1 Small Wrasse
Those sized fish. That's an extreme stocklist for that size tank, but with the right maintenance, CUC and skimmer, it would be fine.

How would that be an extreme stocklist for a 166gallon tank? Its just a BIG cube

WAIT....
maybe I measured something wrong.
Ok, I take this back.
Hang on, I'll redo, I don't know why I thought it was a 40G
Sorry, haven't had my coffee yet

Okay, let's try this again
Since the tank is only 40" long, I'm going to say NO to most tangs with the exception of a Yellow, Kole, Scopus, Tomini, Bristletooth or Convict. You could probably stretch to get a Purple Tang in there, but I wouldn't recommend it.
1 Kole Tang (or one of the others I listed above)
1 Yellow Tang (or one of the others listed)
2 Dwarf Angels (or similar fish - yeah they'll fight in the beginning, but they usually get over themselves, mine did)
2 Clownfish
3-5 Anthias (I prefer Lyretails, seem to be the easiest/hardiest but there are many others)
3 Cardinals or other schooling fish as mentioned in other post
2 Gobies (you could even do three, I have 2 YWG and a Sleeper Banded)
1 Blenny
1 or 2 smaller wrasses
Mandarin
The options are endless, I just prefer more smaller fish zipping around than a few larger fish. I would stay away from most larger fish because of the length of the tank.

Oh, I think we need pics!! 40x40x24? Sounds like a great project. If it was me......
Chevron Tang
Sailfin Tang (might be pushing it)
Heinochus butterflyfish (the reef-safe species)
Scribbled Rabbitfish
3 PJ cardinals
3 Anthias
Spotted Mandarin
Diamond Goby
What sort of hardware are you planning on running? Reef-ready? What about lighting? We all know you've started planning these out....

Well this tank is a custom one that is being cut out of my 80"x24"x24" tank. It will be cut by a WaterJet company in town. I will see if they can cut me some wholes for the Overflow part but if not I will run a HOB Overflow or drill them myself. I will be running everything from the current tank on the cube including the lights which is 2x 36" 4bulb T5 fixtures with individual reflectors.
Keep the suggestions coming as I will take them all in and come up with a somewhat unique group of fish.
I currently have a Christmas Wrasse, 1 B/G chromis and a Lamark Angel I can put in the tank.

Chevron Tangs need a little bit more swimming room than a 40" tank as well as a Sailfin.
Most tangs and angels need a 6' long tank for swimming room. If you already have an angel, I definitely would not put a tang in there unless it was a smaller species such as the Kole.

Well, you can look at the "swimming lines." In a traditional rectangular aquarium, with rocks taking about the back part of the aquarium, the only swimming path is really linear along the front. With a 40"x40" cube, if you take the hypotenuse, it's 56", which is almost 5 feet. If the rocks are designed in a way to promote fish swimming in and around the rocks the long ways, it's enough for the smaller tangs. Enough for the Chevron, but I wouldn't do a Sailfin.

I have a 155G, 6' long tank and my sailfin is not quite full grown yet and even in this tank I think it's a stretch. She swims all day all over the tank, in and out of rock work, etc. Can't wait for the larger upgrade, if my house is ever finished and ready for us to move in.
For now we're stuck in an apt with less 900sq ft and a 155G tank, a 40G and a 14G along with a dog.

Maybe they will let you visit and feed her occasionally. This is no joke, I visited a fish store a couple hours away that claims to have the same hippo tang in a 5 gallon nano for 3 years by feeding it only a couple pellets a day. I am not inclined to believe them, but they claimed that.
