I just got a hi finned 'barbershop' goby and a candy stripe pistol shrimp today via the internet. The shrimp I received is TINY... will they still pair up? If not now, will they eventually pair up when he's larger? He's adorable, btw.

Is your shrimp small like a Randalls? If the shrimp makes large enough burrows for the goby to fit I would think it would use them. Based on my experience I would say that they will pair up within a weeks time. Sometimes they need a few days to get settled before they start venturing out together. Post some pics if you can, you have a few fans of the babrbershop on this thread and I would love too see your shrimp too! Congrats on your new tank mates. :joy:

so far my shrimp hasn't made any burrows, and there's no way it would be big enough for the goby, anyway... he's about a 1/4 inch long. TINY! BUT... they have found each other, anyway. I have a decent sized hole in one of my live rocks, and they are both inhabiting that at the moment. I can't seem to get a good picture because they stay waaay back in the hole and it's dark, but I'll keep trying. :joy:

this is the best pic I've gotten of him so far. I should have taken a pic before I put him in the tank.
The next pic is the best I've been able to get of my new goby so far... he's hiding out in the lr hole...
and finally, my established roommates, my yellow watchman goby standing guard with his pistol shrimp

I should have explained that first blurry pic better... the pink and white splashes on the far right are my new candy pistol shrimp, the small head on the left is my goby... they're in a little hole in my live rock... you can see the hole in the large rock on the bottom left side

That is a tiny pistol! Well the good news is he will grow right? And the two seem to have already made friends so no worries there. Maybe your substrate is too large for the shrimp (at his current size), but as he grows I would imagine he will start burrowing. Thanks for getting some pics. And that little hole in the rock is perfect for them.
Gobies and shrimp are so cool!! :jumping:
(Do you have two tanks or does your substrate just look different in or been changed since the pic with your pistol and watchman pair?)

thanks! I hope he grows fast so I can get to see him a little more. He'll just peek out when I feed them for now.
The YWG & his shrimp are in my 44 gallon tank. I've had that one going for about a year now. They're just the greatest pair! I love them. :joy:

I just got my tiger pistol for my yellow watchman goby and they are so neat, they formed a little pair. I am considering another goby and pistol shrimp, I really want a Bullseye Pistol Shrimp, but I read that they dont form symbiotic relationships with gobies. Tell me what I should get? what kind of goby and pistol shrimp?

I just wanted to add some information on my expereince. They deffinitely will move sand around! They also don't like anything coming into their lair. I have a carribean pistol shrimp and tiger. I have noticed lately that when the a serpent star enters near the carribean's lair, the shrimp will grab a serpent arm with one claw and pop many times with the other. It will continue doing this until the serpent leaves. It doesn't appear to hurt the serpent star. The only animal that it doesn't seem to have a problem with is my blue boxer. The tiger pistol that was paired up with my goby until I did some rock rearranging. Here is an old pic of when they were togther.

Did you also know that the light created in the bubble actually reaches temperatures close the to the sun!. However it is too small to actually see but scientists have actually proved this to be true. Cool Shrimp!

My tiger pistol is a murderous carnivore. First he killed my cleaner shrimp then various snails and hermits. So we started buying him ghost shrimp to keep him occupied. Once we ran out and the next day, there went the twin spot goby.
Then, the unthinkable happened......he killed the yellow watchman! We bought the stupid pistol so they could pair up. We loved that grumpy little watchman.
Now, my LFS has been running low on ghost shrimp again lately or just getting teeny-tiny ones and yesterday at 5am, pow, pow, POW! Dead porcelan crab.
I am now getting ready to try to remove that %*&@$#! I got a 2gal hex and some live rock for him, along with all of the ghost shrimp the LFS had left.
Here's my question, do y'all think I need a heater in there? It stays about 74-76 without a light, 78 with. My water params are all OK, it's been set up for a few weeks with some water and sand from my Nano (where he is now.)
