Random timing; I just got back from a weekend trip to Monterey and a friend up there told me a good technique for loosing weight.
Apparantley in order to burn a pound of fat you need to be -3500 calories. So that can be spread out over a week or a month or a few days. This means if your average caloric intake is 2000 calories, and you only burn 1500 calories doing you average whatever activies: you need to figure out a way to get another 1000 calories burned so your at -500 calories a day and you'll drop a pound a week......it's all math; and therefore can be tracked and accounted for easily.
I'm trying to get from 185 back to 170 (I've gained 30 pounds since college in 3 years), and I'm doing the su
ay lunch thing too. 6" wheat bread with oil and vinegar and pepper. Currently I'm trying to be -1500 calories a day to go for 2 lbs per week. I always blow it on the weekends!
Good luck. I'm excited to hear your progress.

one thing to keep in mind, - products high in fiber are more filling and will keep you fuller longer. Wheat and whole grain breads and pastas if you need to eat them. smart taste pasta have 7 grms of fiber, compaired to regular that has 2. Keep things like baby carrots and celery in the fridge with fat free Italian dressing for dipping. Again, good luck

^ This is a good tool for counting calories. It also has other uses but thats the main thing I use it for when I'm cutting weight. It really helps to have it written out so you know exactly instead of keeping track in your head.
And another thing you mentioned making yourself eat breakfast for the first time. This is very important because if you just eat two big meals a day your metabolism will slow down.

That is the hardest thing for me. It's pretty easy for me to skip meals, keeping the portion control in line while eating at least 3 times a day is my challenge.

Hey, Reefraff, read the link before you post a comment about it. Don't even tell me you skimmed over it, because here's the first paragraph:
"Ask anyone about salt and they'll tell you it's bad for you. Well, they're wrong. Salt is not bad for you. Your body needs it to function properly. What's bad for you is excessive salt, or actually, the sodium part of salt. Americans consume an estimated 4,000-4,500 mg salt a day. We only need 500 mg a day, and it's recommended we get no more than 2,400 mg a day--about the amount in 1 teaspoon of salt. Look for that number to go down: Nutrition experts are expected to change that recommendation to 1500 mg a day, which is under 2/3 teaspoon."

I have a severe case of Tinitus, and I went to an ear specialist for help. After performing every audio and ear fluid test imaginable, he put me on this 1250 mg salt diet. I thought, "No problem. I'll just eliminate adding salt to my foods." I then went to the store and started reading labels. Pretty much everything that is processed and put in a container has a minimum of 100 mg of salt. They say it's 'Nature's Preservative', but I think these companies throw in an extra tablespoon just so they know their product can sit on the shelf for another month. The only way I can maintain that low amount of salt intake is to eat raw vegatables and fruit, and any food product that isn't processed. Even raw meat and fish has at least 100 mg of salt.

Yeah there are a lot of things I eat that I am shocked to find has 750mg of sodium per serving/etc. You know a good treat though is the double-churned Dreyers ice cream. We picked some up last night and it only has 60mg of sodium and 120 calories. Not bad for 1/2 cup of cookies n' cream ice cream. It's only slightly better than those 100-calorie packs, and they taste like garbage.
I think the REAL trick is portion control. We just eat too much of something. I know if I had my way, I'd eat half the box of ice cream in one sitting.

You're exactly right. If you eat smaller portions, you can still eat some of your favorite foods, but still keep the caloric content down to a manageable level. Now if I can keep my wife from putting double helpings of everything she cooks on my plate, I could lose another 10 pounds.

Yep, I can easily eat just 2 HUGE meals a day and be perfectly happy.

You thought about looking at NutriSystems? I know the commercials look somewhat staged, but I know a couple of people who have had great success with that program. You get to select a breakfast, lunch, dinner, plus two or three daily snacks from a variety and wide selection of foods. They portion the meals and balance the calories based on your requirements. The only downside to the program is the price. The cost ranges from $320 - $420 per month for the selections I stated. I think they say it comes to around $14/day on average. If you have difficulty selecting the proper foods to balance out your caloric intake, this program takes out all the guessing work.

The nutrisystem meals are so small!!! But if you can handle them, it could be a great start. Definitely don' try to starve yourself. It's an unhealthy thing to do to your body and you will quickly get a alot of your weight back when you start eating again. What happens is that when you starve yourself, your body goes into survival mode and will start storing as much food as it can when it does get food. When it's not getting food, the metabolism drops. Well something like that. Anytime we have a weight loss contest in the office, one guy always does well because he can really starve himself. However, it amazes me how quicly the wieght comes back when the contest is over.
There are a lot of self help books out there which may help. I like the "clean" program book. It basically tries to purge your body of toxins so you can enter into a major fat burning mode. It works really well if you can stick it out.

OMG EAT!! If you continue starving yourself like that, your metabolism is going to be sluggish as hell. You can't deprive yourself of too many calories... the other people were right, it's all abut calories in calories out. You just need to figure out how many calories you need to sustain your current weight and then cut that by 500 and continue walking. If you're trying to eat healthier then use olive oil or coconut oil instead of other oils and try roasting or grilling instead of frying. If I was depriving myself the way you are, I'd be binging on junk food the very next day! I still think you should look up Paul Mckenna... who doesn't want to eat WHATEVER they want and still lose weight.

Hey there, are you a facebook member look here - http://www.facebook.com/weightwatchers
I am a lifetime member of weight watchers, and the program does work. I can tell you right now, you are not eatting enough. Its based on a points system and you should be eatting over 50 points a day, along with excersize. I lost over a hundred pounds in 84. I am back on program and have dropped 12 lbs in 4 weeks.
your meals should be something like this 4 oz chicken, serving of fresh or frozen veg, maybe a salad if you like them, some sort of whole wheat pasta. you can have some sauces as long as they are low fat. You should not be hungry. add more high fiber products. pop corn is a good snack. Fiberone bars, things like that. you can have baked chips. just watch the serving sizes.
Good Luck
I have a lot of reciepies that would help you, just pm, me.

Day 4. Current weight: 515 pounds
Dropped 3 pounds, little victories like this will keep me going. Although To be fair I did weigh myself after dropping off the kids at the pool.
Today was especially difficult. I had meetings this morning and I overslept, which meant I reverted back to getting up, quick economy shower, and then out the door. No breakfast. First meal was at 1pm, home made turkey sandwich, granola bar, baby carrots, and an apple. I miss having ranch to dip the carrots in.
I think that this is doing something to my sleep schedule, because now it takes me ages to get to sleep, I wake up about 5 times in the night for no apparent reason, and its impossible to get back to sleep. Havnt gotten a good nights sleep in days.
