Just wondering why do you go through all the time and money to maintain your aquariums

Well my reason is i love knowing that there is a tiny chunk of the sea in my home that i can add to and re-organise and see when ever I feel like it. The sea has always wowed me.

It's my passion. I've had tanks for as long as I can remember. And although they can be frustrating and time and money consuming, in the end, the pleasure that I get out of it, is worth it all. Some people spend money to go on vacation, others spend money on drugs, alcohol, etc, I spend money on my fish. Everyone needs to have a joy in life. I can sit in front of my tank after the worst day, and feel at peace (until I see a coral knocked over, etc, LOL). And, let's all be honest, we love that "Wow, that's amazing," that you get from guests that come in your house and see your tank(s).
And then there are the wonderful hobbyists, both online and in my local reef clubs. They're like family. They're more willing to help out when you're in need than your own family and friends most of the time. Great people in this hobby, and even when I'm most frustrated, they keep me in it.

Just like the OP stated -
For me - a month long trip to Figi, Tonga, or the great barrier would run 5grand plus and I'd only have memories & some pictures afterwords.. So I'd rather spend about the same every 3-4 years to have a little of THAT portion of the world in the home to see/interact with every day.

+1 i couldn't agree more when i move out of my mums i'm hoping I'll be able to get a 75 gallon and thats because i love the fox face rabbit fish.I've heard that 75 is an ideal tank size for them.(But suppose it's a little to early to think about the fish i want for a possible and probable tank)

It a virus, I caught it the day I help my nephew set up his 20gal fresh water tank. We walked into the pet store asked where the fish was the guys asked fresh or salt. I question him that there were salt water fish for sale, like from the ocean, he directed me two them and I saw the rainbow. 30 years later I can just sit for hours and stare at the serene gliding fish through water.

Up until 5 years ago, I had zero interest in fish, birds, small pets and reptiles. The only pets I would consider owning were dogs. Then, I by chance stumbled onto a job as a pet care associate at one of the big box pet stores. I learned everything I could about all the pets we carried and discovered that I had passion for all the pets especially fish. I started a 16 gallon fish tank as FW and had minimal luck (even though I was doing things right). I decided to try my hand at SW after talking to some people who convinced me I could do it. I got bit by the bug and really enjoy taking care of my tank. I enjoy everything that goes into my tank and seeing the hard work pay off by seeing the reactions of people that see my tanks. I find the hobby very rewarding.

First it was a hobby, like op, sea has always amazed me.

I love it. I have a passion for it. I make money at it. I'm fixing to go to school for it. I would rather spend money on my tank than going out to eat all the time or saving up for a vacation. Why spend money on a vacation when you can take a mini vacation every time I look at my tank?
Basically I love it and I'm good at it.

Sine I was a kid I loved the ocean. I go to the keys every year to get my fix. I always wanted to be a marine biologist. Living in the mountains makes that a little difficult but now having my reef tanks makes that possible. Best hobby ever.

I was a kid and I said...oh fish, those are pretty cool...then it was just learning how to take care of my new pets....it kept expanding from there. Try this gizmo, try that one...that fish is better looking than this one, change to SW that's where the real pretty fish are...then you need a skimmer, then you need a phosban reactor...always something more to keep things going...then you see another fish and it can live with your already in the tank fish...Dori said it best...just keep swimming, swimming, just keep swimming.
This hobby is addictive, if you stop you lose what you put into it, if keep going you spend more. The critters are awesome.

Couldn't agree more.
And, to fellow hobbyists out there; never give up, the road of success is always closer than you think.

It is the cause and relief of a lot of stress for me. When my wife gets mad at me I go stare at my fish, then she comes and yells at me for staring at my fish........

That's hilaroius. I can totally relate with the wife part. "you spend too much time on your tanks" bark bark bark "you love your fish more than you do me" bark bark bark.
and then I say...."well you are right and this is why"
