ok, so i got this pretty good sized leather coral at a frag swap the other day.
Local reefer was tearing down his tank, getting out of hobby so we did the meeting at his place.
Well i bought a huge rock thats full of fire and ice zoas and its got a big chunk of leather coral on the front of it, probably about 4-5": high with several branches.
I've never owned a leather before and the previous owner said it was going through "it's leather thing" right now.
It doesnt have too much color to it and none of the bumps that I see on other leathers.
Its in my QT frag tank right now under new LED lighting. the otehr corals seem to be reacting well to the light so i'm assuming thats ok.
Just can't tell if I'm doing something wrong or if its just doing its leather thing or its angry from the move.
There is another smaller leather that looks just fine, got it on the same rock.
in addition (I like to give all the info i can) his tank crashed several months ago due to a kalkwasser overdose, so these corals are fighting through all that too, and several are very bleached (the montis mostly). I dunno if this would ahve any effect on it, but I'm just throwing out there.
Do I just sit and wait for it to do its leather thing?

yeah all the corals get quite a bit of flow in there. I have a left over koralia #2 i use and it's just a standard 10g tank. the flow was pretty high origianlly so I point alot of it to the surface to break it up and give me lots of waves to keep the PH up.
just never had one before, maybe this is all normal, the fact that it is smooth instead of bumpy is probably the most alarming.
On another note I also got the worlds longest fire and ice zoas, I'll best these suckers are an easy 4" tall, just a few of them that wernt getting good light where they were in his tank so tehy grew out of a crevise and extended like crazy, funny to soo.

from the web Cabbage Leather (Flower Leather) sloughs off its waxy coating as a purgation process. Some varieties of Cabbage Leather (Flower Leather) secrete a toxin called as Terenoids Toxin. This toxin may harm or kill some other stony corals in your tank, if they happen to come in the vicinity of the toxin. Therefore, remove the sloughed off wax from the coral as soon as possible.

It did have some goo coming off the top of it, I picked it off, I thought it was just gunk from his tank that got caught up on the fingers, but now that makes sense

well the bumps are back today after I got home from work so thats a good sign :)
I got a little tiny leather that is supposed to be from this same bunch and it is one of teh brightest green corals Ive ever seen, so I'm hoping these bigger ones turn the same color.
That would be great.
I also got a cabbage leather and its looking pretty good
and I think a third kind, it looks like a paddle, I'll have to take a pic of it, but it has markings that look consistant with leahters as well.
I also got a good sized chunk of sour apple monti, but its very bleached. got it for pretty much nothing so I thought Id give it a shot and see if I could nurse it back to health.
In the palm of the cup it has alot of grey dead tissue that doesnt seem to wipe off, I'll have to watch for that spreading. Right now the whole coral is kind of a peach color, which is a long way from green :(
