I think it's dumb that "they" say there has to be water for something to live. what if the inhabitants of that planet don't need water or even know what water is? I guess "they" can't imagine life that is totally different than ours.
It is difficult to imagine life different from ours. In fact, there are good reasons why water is sought as the basis for life. Water, carrying both negative and negative charges is a very effective solvent for electrolytes, which makes possible biochemistry in solution. It is even more difficult to imagine life in the solid state. Water, because of its bipolar status, also has high specific heat and heat of vaporization, two factors that make water a pretty good buffer against temperature changes, probably required for life's biochemical reactions. Water also has an extraordinarily high dielectric constant, which makes it a great solvent (see my first comment above). It isn't that life without water is inconceivable, but the unique properties of water, of all liquids, simply make it more likely that a watery environment can host life.
