My company started laying off people about 13 months ago. We had hit 50% lay offs in July and my boss had told us that we hit the critical operating level of the company so they didn't think they could lay anyone else off and stay in business. I guess they're going to try!
I work in the structural engineering field in Southern california. I have colleagues who got laid off in March and have yet to receive an in person interview in the field.
I'm scared.... my lease is up on my apartment in a week and I won't be able to reapply for a smaller unit or studio without a steady paycheck (at least I do'nt think they accept unemployment checks as proof of income)...
Anybody work in the architectural field anywhere have any leads?
Come to San Antonio, Tx. Warm weather, same Mexican food, and $1300/month would rent you a real nice house (4-2-2 and around 3000 sq, ft.). One of the biggest structural engineering firms in the state, Raba-Kistner, is right down the street from my house.

$1300/month for a 1 bedroom apartment in California is a pretty decent price. I had a two bedroom in San Diego for 1650 and then later a 3 bedroom for 2300 a month. I understand your desire to stay in southern California. I can't imagine living anywhere else except New York.

If you're open to relocating, start putting your resume out on the Internet, or start searching for jobs online via the Internet.
Unfortunately the building industry is hit very hard with this recession.

good gawd !!!!

that is twice my house payment 3-3-2, fairly large lot.

Thats california for you. My parents bought a house in 1990 that was 4 bedrooms, 2.5 bath, 2 car garage, gigantic backyard all for 250k. Their monthly payment was only like 1500 bucks I think.

Relocating is definitley not the first option.
I went ahead and updated my Monster jobs profile and I'm updating my resume so that is a good start.
Gonna look on my college job posting, that I incidentally found my most recent job from a few years ago. Then there is always calling up an old employee (feels like hitting on an old gf!)
My other thoughts is to go into the alternative energy installation and design industry. Its supposed to be an expanding industry

So I got a call this morning from an HR person at the architecture firm that had inquired for my resume, and they want me to come in for an interview tomorrow for an immediatley available position!
So thats good news. Also talked to my apartment complex and they are willing to drop my rent a few hundred dollars a month if I resign with them. So if I get the job, I should be getting a raise and I'll be saving on rent!!!
Which means more money to setup my 40 gallon

Ok maybe I'm getting ahead of myself here, but all good news at the moment.
Wish me luck for tomorrow.

Good luck....sounds like you got a good rep to get a call that quick. Hope things work out for the better and hope your old company regrets losing you!
Downsizing blows as do the people doing it!

So I got an e-mail this morning with a job offer, I start on Monday. Still working in Orange County, and its comparable to what I was making. Which is always nice.
Not bad, just got the initial response from the state of california for my unemployment benefits. So won't even have to cut into that.
So maybe I will be able to set up my 40 tank now

Congrats. You can keep dumping money into the economy with our "always spending" hobby.
