but so far he hasn't caused any trouble. he eats some formula one that floats by hasn't touched the clown. but we are going to add more fish. but he is afraid. so where going to catch that thing first. and i think its a mimic octopus cause he changes color real good.

If he's eating frozen foods he should be a good aquarium pet. You should sell/give it to some one on here. He will deffinately eat fish, crabs, clams, snails, and just about anything.

well to tell if they are male or female it appears that you have to look inside the mantle and look for some kind of gland, but to me i would think that you would kill it in the process of trying to do so

do they eat fish or what? he dosent want it in there how can we get it out? and all his rocks are covered in mushrooms so we cant use any chemicals.
Chemicals?? Why would you try to kill the guy? Get that sucker out and sell him to your LFS, Or ship him to me, I'll buy him. Also judging by your pics that sucker is huge. I find that hard to believe it was just a hitchhiker on some LR, the guy pulling out the rocks must of been blind to miss that. Surely that was a specimen they were selling and are probably wondering where it went. Like I said, I'll buy it.

where not trying to kill it.

he hides in the live rock. and im kind afraid to touch it.
will it constrict around my hand if i hold it? if it does that and if its beak takes a bite out of me i would freak out, and yell and try to kill it there.

and i have notices some empty hermit crab shells around his tank... do they eat hermits too??? if they do then what kind of clean up crew should people keep with octopuses?

with octo's you dont have a CUC for that reason anything that is alive is fair game for it to eat, you just have to vacum(sp?)the top of the bottom off ever so often

if he is only an inch long the bite should not be to nasty...i'm thinking bee string? or wear some rubber gloves....good luck again!!!

i was thinking more like a bird bite alot like a parakeet or other birdssince octo's have a beak , but i would think those big thick yellow latex gloves would work since there thicker.

correct, and even if they went in, they know how to get out. At my LFS, a dude wanted this octopus and they couldnt get him that day. so a couple days later they still cant trap him, and they offered me $20 if i could get it, so i go home, make a bottle trap, within seconds he goes in grabs, the ghost shrimp, and before i pull it out of the water he flopped him self right back thru the bottle. amazing critters. ph, and this octo was in a 2 gallon tank without rock.

but im actually really surprised its alive cause the water is only 3 weeks old not. it was still in the cycling process when we got him/her. its weird it didnt die. but i guess its cycled now?

I've heard of people putting a crab or feeder shrimp in a bottle inside the tank and watching it go in and be prepareed to take him right out

Possibly baby O. briareus judging by the webbing on the arms and blue iridescent color with red mottling. If so, it will grow to around 24" arms, 7" mantle. For now it will eat fiddlers, hermits, snails. When it grows big enough it will eat anything. I'm skeptical though. The mantle-arm size seems off.
When you say it's an inch long, do you mean legs and all or just the mantle?

Wrong. The third right arm is the hectocotylus on the male octopus, and will usually be carried curled most of the time. The tip will be noticeably different from the rest. Also males generally tend to have over-sized suckers on their arms closer to their mantle.
