I have a mantis in my tank that I am trying to catch. I have yet another trap that I am going to try tonight. If anyone wants it, you can have it. That is if I ever catch it!!!!
It is fun to read this thread. My tank maintance guy said that no one would want a mantis. He told me to throw it in the back yard! The LFS told me to bring it in to feed to the triggers. He is kind of cute, so I feel bad. It's not his fault he is in my tank. However, until I get him out he is still going by the name "stupid mantis shrimp."
I so want it! Too bad I live in CA.

Good luck catching it

They get a really bad rap. There are fish that are menaces to tanks, but an lfs wouldn't throw that in the backyard
I agree with you too that it isn't there fault, they didn't ask to get harvested, but, what can you do. They are kinda cute huh

Catchy name by the way

Gingi was worrying us a little bit for the past little bit because she was being a lot less active. We had fed her some clams for a change of pace, and she acted funny after that, so we were worried the food had done something to her. Well, she is back to her normal self the past couple of days, and I snapped some pics.

Yay! This past week has been the worst week of my life but this cheered me up!

How's Monty?
Does Gingi bother the corals?

Anything Gingi can do to help

Monty is doing well. It would be near impossible to get any pics of his whole body. He is a skiddish little fella. A couple of days ago he didn't know I was watching the tank, and came out by the Duncan, and I got to see his whole body, which I rarely see, and he has really grown. Once he realized he had been spotted, he booked it for the nearest rock.
Gingi bothers corals all of the time
She has no regard for the parts of her tank that make it look nice. She really likes to swim in the xenia and step on everything else. They retract for a couple minutes, but are fine afterwards. She's such a brat, but a cute one

Why do mantis's build new 'homes' all the time? Do they get tired of their current home in the tank and want to build a new one? Does she make it out of rocks?

They are a very territorial creature. We sort of had "premade homes" (holes in the rocks basically) for her to choose from. She stuck to one home for quite sometime, but apparently decided she wanted some more space. I have seen, and heard her, trying to connect the two by breaking up rock, but so far, she hasn't been successful at it.
The opening in the rocks should be more of a small hole above the sand rather than a large cave, since they dig there home in the sand under the rocks. She uses live rock rubble to cover her holes whenever she feels she needs more privacy (like when she molts). Monty, since he is so small, uses sand to cover his tiny hole and uses it every night to close up shop.

She tried to connect the two?? She's smart! And she covers it up so you can't see her, that is so cute.

I would add more sand if you can. I've noticed Gingi really digs a lot. That is where they technically make there homes (except for some species that prefer holes in rocks). Even Monty has little spots dug in the sand under rocks that he hides out in. Are you getting it soon?

I don't know a lot about these creatures and this thread made me go looking for more info. They are awesome. Great thread by the way. I did, however find this good little informative site about different types. http://www.seahorse-nw.com/Mantis_Shrimp.html
Great site! Loved the pics
Here is another really informative site for anyone interested. The guy that did all this, Dr. Roy, studies them for a living. This is an informative site, but if against the rules, I can remove it.
