Mantis!

SWF.com has a Peacock Mantis for sale. Looks nothing like a Peacock though.
In other news, still no luck with a local Peacock

Also have a possible reason why my 2nd Mantis died. Went and got my water checked today.
Copper: 0
Nitrates: 0
Ammonia: 0
Salinity: 1.028

Did a 5g fresh water change. Stupid, stupid hydrometer. I plan on getting a refractometer soon. LFS wanted to charge me $80 when I can get one for $25 w/free shipping.

I always give the bag water a little salinity check before I start to acclimate. For all we know, the bag water could have been close to 1.028.

Hey bandit-
I am in arizona too! What LFS are you going to? I am curious because I have worked closely with 80% of them and maybe you are ordering from one that has issues and THAT is why they are dying. I am really curious to know where you get your stuff from!!
I am in Chandler. Where are you at?

I live in East Mesa. My usual stops are Pets Inc and Aquarium Arts. Not sure if I can discuss their operations but I like them both. But both have their bad sides. I do on occasion, visit ***** only to browse. I was actually impressed with their selection some days. I also have visited Aqua Touch, Ocean Floor, and About the Reef. Good stores but I needed to be alone. I was on a time limit

I ordered my last 2 Mantis off BZA.com. If you want to know about them and their rep with Mantis, PM me or Cranberry. I feel both of them have perished partially due to shipping and handling and also I feel I could have taken better care in acclimating them and checking my water to an exact point.
Im trying to get one locally at Pets Inc but I have been on their list for over a month now with no confermation call or ya know "Just letting you know we are still looking for your Mantis" call

I'm sorry about all your trouble. After I stock my five gallon, I'll be making a mantis tank too. I'm worried that I wont be able to actually get ahold of one now though. o_O

I shop at both of those places. I was just curious more than anything... They are okay. Aquarium arts has the best prices all around but sometimes I worry about how they take care of things and how they treat their critters.
About the reef will order on in for you. Chris Rader is a great guy and he is very smart. I would advice that you call them and have them order you one, even if it is a little more expensive. They will QT it for you and watch it and make sure that it is okay. If it's not, then they will order you another one if it dies in the store.
They take great care of their fish and they feed better and their systems are a bit nicer.
Just a thought. If I were going to order one locally (Which sounds like it might work better) I would order it from them.

Thank you very much for your input. I will deffinetly call them tomorrow. I appreciate the advice.
Im not sure I like the prices at Aquarium Arts. Their coral is pricey and they dont seem to have alot of variety. They are also switching to freshwater/saltwater which sucks! IMO. Before, you would see maybe 4 or 5 people in now the place is packed and backed up with Fresh water customers.
Pets Inc does have the best coral selection I have seen though. Their frags tanks are great. Nothing beats a awesome $5 frag. Both Pets Inc and Aquarium Arts do have a great selection of fish. I went into both shops and saw only 1 dead fish in both stores. I was very impressed.
I just wouldnt recommend buying one offline unless its http://stomatopod.com If I cant get one locally soon, they are where I am buying mine. They said they are going to have new shipments within the next 3 weeks. They were moving and setting up shop somewhere else so thats why they havent had any new shipments.

Yeah make sure you talk to Chris Rader, and if not him, then chris stevens. Don't bother talking to anyone else. There are a few young twits that work there and they will say anything and those guys don't know what is going on.

lol I would love to set up a mantis tank but I think my boyfriend would be creeped out. He is not so into inverts and honestly, I don't think I could actually touch it or do much with it. I think they are soooo cool though.
If I were to get one, I would want a peacock. I love the colors!
So with this next guy... What is the plan? Buy him locally and then... What?? Any changes to the setup? or is everything ready and correct??

Haha I bet you $100 your boyfriend would love watching it destroy a crab or hermit.
I am looking into ***********. I may buy one from them. Locally is starting to look like its not going to happen. It seems during the colder season, they stop harvesting Mantis.
Everything in my tank is ready. I have coraline spreading, I just added a Aqua C Urchin skimmer, chaeto is growing, refugium is filling with coraline, I have gotten the water checked and the Nitrates and ammonia are untraceable, copper is not in the tank, and the salinity is 1.024. Everything is ideal. Hermits are constantly changing shells and active, snails are laying eggs, fish are alive and biting me whenever I put my hand in the tank. I mean seriouslly, its totally ready for a Mantis.
If I could just pull the knot out of Fedex's @$$, then my Mantis would survive.

Yeah live aquaria could work. I have used the for research but never ordered from there.
What about SWF.com?? they don't have a mantis shrimp??
Also, did you talk to the guys at About the Reef?? Were they able to help or not?

SWF isnt specific with their Mantis. They have one for sale that is titled Peacock Mantis but looks nothing like one.
I did just order mine off ***********. They seem to be my best bet besides stomatopod.com Everyone cross your fingers this one lives.
I called About the Reef and talked to Chris Rader. Very helpful dude. He did set me up with a medium size one but it wouldnt be available for another month. Was also going to be $80 so I just decided on a smaller one for the same price. I'd rather get it small and keep it for longer.
On other news, Page 4

I am glad that you got ahold of him. He has never steered me wrong, and he really knows his stuff. He actually has a marine biology degree and has worked with ASU and their biology department to write some text books and some classification materials for various areas of the animal kingdom. I thought that was pretty cool myself.
80 bucks isn't too bad of a price though. I was thinking it would be more.
I also visited that aqua touch place today. REALLLLY far drive for me, but it was a nice little shop. Very CLEAN tanks but the people there were LESS than helpful and also, alot of their fish had nips and tears in them. In multiple tanks too... But, they are also the only place in town that carries the ADA tanks and also the Vortech MP line.
Always good to have options.
So when is your manits arriving?
