Called MarineLand yesterday and they said send it back to them and they'll send a replacement without receipt free of charge.

I can vouch for the new jager thermostat heater. I put a 300w in my 180g, set the temp, and have not had to adjust it. I have also smacked it up against the rock a couple times, and no cracks, etc. The 2mm thick shock resistand pyrex glass is nice. I would recommend this heater to anyone.

The directions do say to submerge them and running them not fully submerged will damage them. There are heaters that are not submersible and the package says so.
Their directions is whats getting them in trouble to begin with. It says they are fully submersible but nothing says to fully submerge them. There is a line where it shows where it must be submerged. These heaters are not meant to be fully submerged because there are leaks that I highly doubt Marineland checks for.

If it says sbmerge that what it means...don't leave the dial part out either, it does say completely submerge and gives a warning to not have any part out of water when running. I'm no expert and it has been a while, but I'm pretty sure.
LOl....I have no clue either....mine have always been completely submerged, but they are also only as old as the tanks...2 years, and 1 1/2.......I also never have them plugged in during the summer months.....actually I only plugged the one in the 54G in 2 weeks ago (on an outside wall).....the 29G is still unplugged, and the 2 heaters for my 225G are not even in the tank.....Not sure where I am gonna put them yet

Quick search on the net pulled up quite a few threads and a number of bad reviews on these heaters. It looks like the ones with either the white or red lettering on them have an arrow at the top outlining how deep they should be submerged. Maybe they're the older style but the ones with no writing on them have no such arrow. Sounds like certain ones that were made were thought to leak from the top. Perhaps a new change in the design somewhere along the way.

I am going to have a look at mine when I get home, I think there is an arrow on it. I have had the top part out (just the dial) for the last 6 months.

Like i said, it doesnt matter what they say. Theyre are not meant to be completely submerged. the minimum level is where they should be at. there are possible holes that they can leak through from the top. manufacturers are usually not correct about their products.

Your being funny right? I mean you don't really think that you know more how to employ a gizmo better than those who created the product...

I agree, some are meant to stay out a little and some are for total underwater...follow the instructions.

You can choose to believe me or not. I review tons of products for a job for a respectable blog in this hobby and give my honest opinion. I'm obviously not joking when I've reitterated three times already. When these things mess up, they can even explode and break your sump. The problem with how you're viewing the product is that you're not open to any ideas. Products fail and thats why certain products have much more merit than others. If you venture out of this forum and just do a quick google search, you'll find endless threads regarding the heaters failing just after 2-3 months. Don't take it from me if you don't want to believe what I'm saying.
It wasn't me that came up with the suggestion that there were leaks on top. This is the best I can suggest until they resolve the issue. Marineland told me themselves (when I called up asking questions about their increased recent number of faulty heaters) to put it at the minimum level. It CAN be completely submerged but I wouldn't do it.

Well I'll take your word for it.....I raised the one in my 54G up...problem is the lip on the tank limits you....unless you want to hang it in the middle of the tank....which I do no want.....BUT the temp dial is above the water anyways. I will move the 29G heater soon, and worry about the 225G ones when I put them back in the tank

You hit the nail on the head!!!!!

JMO...If the manufacturer lost enough sales they would retest and figure out the flaw. If a product does not function as it should DO NOT PURCHASE that product. I went with a titanium heater with the dial outside far away from the heater this time. I won't use Marinelands products and by word of mouth neither will others. I hated their canister filter too.
It's a win, win for them, if you use the product not consistent with instructions the warranty is no good.

I have to agree with Flower. Pretty much every product out there will have good reviews and bad reviews. The thing is the bad is always more memorable than the positive. Perception is reality.
