hey fellow reefers. I'm looking for other peoples opinions on mark weiss products like reef vital DNA, F.O.R.M. (Funky old reef mud), combo vital, spectra vital, and black powder. I am not going to state whether I use these products or not I am just looking for peoples real expirience with them. whether you think they help, make no difference, or are just a great marketing ploy for unsuspecting newbies. the more time you have used them the better for long term effects or lack thereof. or maybe why you stopped useing them quickly if you have used them and stopped. maybe noticed detrimental effects. I would appreciate any input. thanks guys and gals.

They are a marketing ploy.
People who add them can have tremendous tanks, but I guarantee that if they stop adding them their tank will remain nice.
That is, with proper care and regular water changes...
There is nothing in those products that will benefit your corals without compromising your water quality, and nothing your corals need that they will not get from target feedings and water changes...

Any company that markets mud for the reef tank is a scam company in my book. All those miracle mud, funky mud, etc.. products are wet dirt. You can go to the local stream with a shovel and get the same stuff for free.

I have used coral vital in the past with great results. Ricordia mushrooms and zoos really respond to it. When I say respond I mean they get bigger and multiply. Do your research but what I have found is that unless you feel it is really going to do some damage to your tank try a small amount and see for yourself. There are many opinions on supplements for or against them. Some say only water changes are best and maybe they are but every tank is different. I haven't used it in a while only because it's expensive but I did place an order for some yesterday.

Would you acept "creative marketing"? :hilarious
Now, to the topic at hand...
The problem with additives is that if you don't test for them you don't know if they are being consumed and at what rate they are being consumed. Coral Vital, for instance, lists NaCl (read salt for non-chemists...) as an ingredient. Do ya really need to add salt to your tank?
Your salt mix probably contains copper, for instance. "TRACE" amounts of copper are needed. Any measurable amount, however, will kill your inverts.. Many additives promote "trace" elements. The problem is, they are trace elements for a reason. If you add them to your tank and nothing is consuming them then they slowly build up until you could have toxic levels. (How many people test for Manganese, Potassium, selenium, Iron, etc.?)
If you can't test for it don't add it....

A cool trick to get huge shrooms and rics: use scissors and cut them in half. Cut them like you were cutting a pizza in half, but don't cut the center, mouth section. When this heals, the shroom will grow twice as big.
Don't do it too much. I have two hairy mushrooms that I did this to 3 or 4 times. They are now over 8" each and are actually a nusiance.

I use the coral vital, and honestly I think the livestock is getting a little bigger, but could also be time..The bottle was a throw in from the LFS for this very reason

I've only been at this for a year & a half, so I'm still reading & guessing. I bought some Kents, Coral-vite, Coral accel,& PhytoPlex. Can't see that a company like this would manufacture a product that would harm their trade.I want to replace what my skimmer takes out. What other choices are there. I'd like some real nice zoos but nobody in my area ever gets any, hint.
