BREAKING NEWS — A massive 8.8-magnitude earthquake capable of tremendous damage struck central Chile early Saturday, shaking the capital for a minute and a half and setting off a tsunami.
Buildings collapsed and phone lines and electricity were down, making the extent of the damage difficult to determine. At least 6 people were killed, President Michele Bachelet said.
"We have had a huge earthquake," Bachelet said, speaking from an emergency response center in an appeal for Chileans to remain calm. "We're doing everything we can with all the forces we have. Any information we will share immediately."
Bachelet said early reports were that six people had been killed, and "without a doubt, with an earthquake of this magnitude, there will be more deaths."
Chilean TV reports put the death toll as high as 10.
A 6.2-magnitude aftershock also hit the region, according to U.S. government reports.
She urged people to avoid traveling in the dark, since traffic lights are down, to avoid causing more fatalities.
The quake hit at 3:34 a.m. (0634 GMT; 1:34 a.m. EST) and was centered 200 miles southwest of the capital, Santiago, at a depth of 22 miles the U.S. Geological Survey reported.
The epicenter was just 70 miles from Concepcion, Chile's second-largest city, where more than 200,000 people live along the Bio Bio river, and 60 miles from the ski town of Chillan, a gateway to Andean ski resorts that was destroyed in a 1939 earthquake.
An Associated Press Television News cameraman said some buildings have collapsed in Santiago, where power was out in parts of the city. An important church was among the buildings that came down in the central city of Providencia, where window glass shattered into the streets and people ran from multistory buildings, according to TV Chile.
The Pacific Tsunami Warning Center issued a warning for Chile and Peru, and a less-urgent tsunami watch for Ecuador, Colombia, Panama, Costa Rica and Antarctica. It said a tsunami could also hit Hawaii later in the day.
"Sea level readings indicate a tsunami was generated. It may have been destructive along coasts near the earthquake epicenter and could also be a threat to more distant coasts," the center said.
The U.S. west coast tsunami warning center said it did not expect a tsunami along the west of the U.S. or Canada but was continuing to monitor the situation.
The largest earthquake ever recorded struck the same area of Chile on May 22, 1960. The magnitude-9.5 quake killed 1,655 people and left 2 million homeless. The tsunami that it caused killed people in Hawaii, Japan and the Philippines and caused damage to the West Coast of the United States.
The Associated Press contributed to this report.

I saw this news clip:
Reuters reported that a tsunami caused by the quake caused "serious damage" to Chile's sparsely populated Juan Fernández Islands. Citing local police, CNN reported that the islands had been hit by a 40-meter (131-foot) wave.

So will this wave get bigger or smaller as it approaches Hawaii?

Isn't Hawaii something like 7000 miles away from Chile? Wow those things travel fast.
Not sure. But I found this:
NBC station KNHL reported that the first tsunami wave was expected to reach Hawaii's coastline at 11:19 a.m. local time (4:19 p.m. ET).

Yeah, that's almost 500mph. I'm just amazed.

It is amazing and true. They move along as nothing but a ripple on the water until it meets the contour of a shoreline, then it intensifies and builds into huge powerful waves sucking the water ahead of it out from shore. That's why if you see the water getting sucked out to sea, run like hell!!

Yep. It's not like you see some big ass wave coming to shore but rather a regular wave that comes in and keeps coming in. It also depends on what type of earthquake it was detemining if a tsunami will be produced. If the plates shift where shift up and down rather than side to side, I beleive that is what causes the tsunami. The plates that shift up displaces the water is the way I understand it.

I've seen reports that tsunamis can travel close to the speed of sound.

I've always pictured it kind of like a Newton's Cradle. I don't know if that is the same concept or not.

IMPORTANT POINTS FOR AREAS IN A TSUNAMI WARNING
•A tsunami wave is a series of waves. The first wave may not be the largest!
•Each individual wave crest can last 5-15 minutes or more and can extensively flood coastal areas!
•Time from one tsunami wave to the next can be five minutes to an hour. Threat may persist for many hours as multiple waves arrive.
•Move to higher ground immediately! Do NOT head toward the coast to watch!
•Listing an arrival time below does not imply a wave is imminent, per Pacific Tsunami Warning Center.
Here are the latest tsunami warnings and advisories, and arrival times of the first waves.
HAWAII
•Arrival of first wave:
Hilo: 11:05 AM HST (4:05 pm EST)
Honolulu: 11:37 AM HST (4:37 pm EST)
Kahului: 11:26 AM HST (4:26 pm EST)
•There are no coasts of the island that are safe! These waves can wrap around the islands and affect all coasts! Wave heights tend to be highest in harbors such as Hilo Harbor, Kaneohe Bay and Waikiki Beach!
I have a feeling there will be those that don't follow this:
Do NOT head toward the coast to watch!

About 25 more minutes to see if it hits ...
I wonder if you put some nets out if you could catch some nice fish and coral?

I just got a news alert on the computer that the waters are receding and that is the first possible sign of a tsunami....
I have not been watching the news today .... so I may be a little behind

It didn't sound right that the water would have receded if they were going to be hit. A Tsunami is a different animal than a typical wind generated wave. It has a wall of water pushing it from below the surface. I would think the receding water was an indication that wave had passed by in the general area and was pulling water away from the island in it's wake. Haven't been able to find anything on that but definitely fascinating stuff.
