I have seen new stuff there, but not as much recently: they seem to be very deliberate in what they add to or delete from their menu. I was frankly very surprised when they added salads to their menu and they changed that up a couple of times but it's as if they have stopped making any changes. Also, they don't roll out new stuff in all markets, but do a lot of test marketing in selected locations before they implement changes companywide so some parts of the country may not ever see new stuff, until it has been thoroughly tested in a lot of other stores.
When they find a winner they definitly keep it around. For a long time, thier revenue growth was resulting from new restaurants as opposed to same store sales and they found out that in some cases they were actually stealing sales from one store instead of opening up new markets/customers by opening up too many stores too close to each other, kinda like Starbucks.
They are like the WalMart of fast food; in tough times, the inexpensive places either hold thier own or actually have sales growth and it's hard to beat that Dollar Menu at Mickey D's!

i havent eaten at a McD's in so long... i dont even know what is on the menu...
i did see the NBC McDocumentary a few months ago and the last few new things they introduced were huge failures... with the exception of the snack wrap... come to think of it... isnt one of the new snack wraps spicey??? the only other real success was the McRib... its smart biz to stick with what sells... Big Macs and QP's with cheese and their fries...

There's a reason my family calls it McNasty's......I'd rather go somewhere else and eat than eat there. Or cook at home.

I haven't been to a Micky D's in YEARS... Many years, I would say at least 6-8 if not more. Their crap is just gross. This past winter my friend, who drives in snow and I don't like to (we worked the same shift) went to a BK. I got a burger. Nasty upon nasty...

Mickey D's gears their menu towards one specific audience - kids. McNuggets, McFries, etc. They added salads and chicken wraps so the parents could justify eating healthy while their kids played on the elaborate play areas, instead of having to suck down a Bic Mac or Quarter Pounder. Now they're trying to reel in the yuppie coffee drinkers with their Starbucks counterpart McCafe.

I agree McDonald's motto is "stick with what sells" and they do a very good job at it. Outside of limited time options like the McRib and Shamrock Shakes there really aren't many changes to the menu. I don't go there often but if I do it's gotta be a Filet O' Fish

That's because McDonald's knows it customers. When someone goes to McD's they're either a Big Mac or Quarter Pounder (or Double QP is they're over 220lbs) person, and that's what they're getting, period. Some flash in the pan Steakhouse XT isn't going to sway them (though the Triple Angry Whopper was great).
I'm pretty sure McD's still outsells the other guys by a lot.

Other than their 99 cent spicy chicken sandwich (forget what they renamed it to, was the Mc Chicken) I wont eat anything but their fries but that spicy sandwich is really good and for a buck it's hard to beat.

They do what they do right. Same reason "In & Out" (for those in CA or NV) only has a 4-5 item menu, and they are insanely busy. (Of course I left the secret menu out.)

I wonder where michael is to weigh in on this.
But this is my opinion. McDonalds is cheap, markets themselves to a segment of the population that values fast food. Think about it. When was the last time you saw a McDonalds commercial aimed at white people. They are shooting for minorities. In texas almost every McDonalds commercial is focused towards Latin Americans. And think about it. To most foreign nationals, eating at McDonalds is a luxury item. Plus they fit the demographic that would eat there. It is actually not a bad idea at all.
Because they aren't selling their product based on taste (a major weakness) but on branding of themselves and our country. Something that is strong.
Then they play on nostalga. How many of you absolutely loved going to McDonalds? I know I did. So when I go, it is because I'm remembering the fun we used to have there.

I had McD's on Wednesday night. I hadn't had it in years but it was late and I hadn't eaten since the previous day and was just coming off the freeway. The fries are still good. But I actually had to wipe the salt off. But I don't know why you think they haven't added to their menu. There were all sorts of weird things on there. I couldn't even find the McChicken on the menu so I got the Big Mac. That was a mistake.... but the fries were worth it and the dogs appreciated the meat patty. The bun and sauce tasted good.
