Mixed reef question ?

I am just wondering how do people that keep a mixture of corals such as sps,lps and soft corals meet the diffrent lighting needs that all these corals have ?

Basically, you have a lighting system to meet the needs of the most light demanding corals and you place them towards the top or in positions of direct light and stagger the rest around lower, having the lower light and non-photosynthawhateva closer to the bottom, or in more indirect light.

to do that you must need a tank of certain depth. Can a mixed reef (SPS AND LPS ) be done in a tank that is 2ft deep using 400w MH ?

That will work, just keep the LPS away from the SPS or they will send out sweepers.
LPS can handle intense lighting if acclimated to it.

could this approach of placing the sps up the top and the lps down the bottom work the if was to use T5's instead of MH ?
and when using T5's is more watt usualy required ?

That depends on the T5 fixture.....what size tank are you talking about?
I have a 4 bulb T5 set up on my 29G and keep sps, lps, clams, and mini anemones w/o issue

Its all about location. Light is only one factor which is pretty easy to figure out. There are certain LPS that I can keep at the surface, and certain SPS I can't because they'll bleach. I have (5) 54w T5 on my 55. You also have to consider spacing. Softies that grow quickly can easily cover and kill slower-growing LPS and SPS.

so far all I have decided on are
2 clowns
yellow tang
blue tang

Ahhh I missed the mention of soft corals earlier.
Soft corals + SPS is a big risk. It can be done but some types of soft corals, well, most, will disperse chemical weapons when they begin to feel cramped. It's not something noticeable other than SPS growth slows to almost a full stop. Weekly filtering with GAC will remove the offending chemicals.

It's more the sps and lps that i want to mix.perhaps its just me but soft corals dont seem to be all that colourful

They can be very colorful, espectially Zoanthids and Mushrooms. Mushrooms would be an excellent choice for filling in the gaps, they tend to live peacefully along side stoney corals. A wide selectioon of very colorful Ricordea Mushrooms are available.

I would look at the 6 foot t5 fixture for this tank. Would leave you 1.5 feet on each side of the tank for lower light coral with high light coral in the center section of the tank.
I suggest the

60 Inch 6x80W Sunlight Supply Tek Light High Output Fluorescent Lighting Fixture

Also a dwarf angel is always a risk with any LPS and soft coral but in a tank that size, with a lot of coral the risk is a lot smaller. I have a blue pygmy angel in a 29 biocube with mostly SPS coral but a couple of LPS and some ricordea and zoanthids. So far he is doing fine. I feed the fish a lot so this may also help to keep them from nipping.
