DeMartini... thanks for the Wikipedia reference for emo... little did I know that I was an emo fan... at least of the seminal bands. Husker Du was groundbreaking (they still sound unique today). Dag Nasty was great. Ian MacKaye was incredibly innovative with his music (essentially inventing Straight Edge

[hr]
-- Minor Threat's "I got the straight edge"). I guess I'm just a bit too old now...
As far as over rated-ness goes... I'd have to say KISS. Maybe you can argue that they broke the stage act mold and led the way for GWAR, but the music wasn't that good. And maybe the Rolling Stones. I never "got it" with them.
You have to remember that many of the "overrated" bands you've mentioned were revolutionary at the time... it's just that copycats have swamped the market and diluted was was originally "their" music.
U2 was amazing for the meaningful lyrics in what was really a new popularized style of British punk (think "--- Pistols for the masses"). It's virtually impossible for someone young to listen to U2's Boy or War and appreciate how different the sound was -- neither punk, nor pop. Now it just sounds unrefined. The same can be said of Nirvana... they invented a very new sound.
All that to say that I have a sibling in the music industry and unfortunately, getting "recognized" has little to do with talent. With the right luck, fat wallet, and connections, just about anyone who can carry a tune can get a deal. Most of the true artists are the ones playing for next to nothing because they love it.

In my opinion; all new bands are over-rated. Specifically all that emo, punk, and rap crap. One name lingers though; Lenny Kravitz. Don't know if he counts, but I remember almost all his songs were remakes, no originality, plus he looked like an idiot. The age of quality, original music is long gone. Nowadays most bands have to cover or do a remix of some other band's great hit just to fill a CD. "Good" songs can't keep it up for even 3 or 4 minutes anymore. I don't even want to get started on how repetitive it gets.
One thing that bothers me more than new crappy music; is old quality music played to death. Those songs you hear on a classic rock radio station that get played 3 or more times a day. Drives me insane, it's not like they have a shortage of songs or anything.

My top 4 most overrated...
1. Creed/Nickelback (aren't they one in the same?)
2. Green Day
3. Metallica
4. Oasis
Its hard to put the Beatles and Elvis on any overrated list when you look at them in the context of their generation. They both were pioneers in their day and influenced music greatly. As far as the 4 listed above in 10-20 years they will have had zero impact on music. Creed, has no talent what so ever. Green Day is a sell out punk band who pretends not to be. Metallica is the same for a metal band and Oasis is as far away from the Beatles as can be, but they love to compare themselves to them. Heck, Noel Gallagher would have to believe they are just as influential!

I know of Velvet Revolver and I agree they aren't that good. But there is no reason to include them in the discussion because the music they make doesn't sound anything like what G n R made.
If you actually listen to some of the lyrics they had, it's pretty good stuff. Most of it is not your carbon copy crap that you get today. Although there is some like that. Plus, in an era that was really pretty one dimensional (80's hair bands usually sound pretty similar) they stood out and were able to make music that was distinct from the hair band sound. It holds up much better than most of that stuff over time. That's my opinion anyway. I'm not surprised younger people don't like it.

I don't get this line of thought. So they changed with the times a little. Do you really need the same style of music rehashed every couple years for 20+ years?
2 off of black? You're kidding right? I would say black was their best album. The thing is, Hatfield can sing a little. But he really didn't do much real singing until Black. And he did more and better singing afterward. I would say the stuff after Black wasn't so much heavy metal as it was just plain rock and roll. And I don't see what's so wrong with that. But apparently that makes them sellouts. The fact is, their 80's style had lost steam, and they knew it. Even from a creative standpoint, why would they keep making that style music?

I agree with those who say Nirvana. I do like some of their stuff. But as soon as Curt died EVERYONE suddenly thought they were one of the best bands ever. The day before he died, they were just one of many seattle grunge bands. All of them were influential and they brought a new sound to the industry. I personally don't think Nirvana was even the best of it's time. I'd rather listen to Soundgarden any day. Pearl Jam too, although they're horrible now for the most part.

PJ didnt make a couple songs with AIC... the band Temple of the Dog was a mix of Sound Garden and PJ and to be more specific the PJ band members that were formily in Mother Love Bone... it was a tribute to the former lead singer of Mother Love Bone... Eddie sang back up on a couple songs...
i think AIC wrote Alone and PJ performed it...

well i consider that both of theirs, if one person writes and another performs, its just as much the writers song as it is the performers.

So if we're turning this into a game of semantics, I guess Turn the Page is not only Bob Seger's, but Metallicas as well?

so every cover artist out there is entilted to the song... so i guess Alien Ant Farm is just as entitled as Michael Jackson???
