Who is Paul and what has he go to do with my cabinet?

This statement by jackri is in reference to a guy named paul.

Read an article from another website -- can't post the link but its almost 40 years old -- he replaces the sand if I remember correctly with sand from the ocean. He lives on the coast -- I'm as far away as you can get ;)

Since we have to be carfull about posting links here it probly doesn't make too much sense to you. However it deals with your thoughts on using sand from a sand bar. Paul started his first tank with sand from the ocean too. He stated that it quickley went sour on him. It is too fine and doesn't allow flow through it. He now uses dolimite for his substrate.
So, he doesn't use sand from the ocean however, he does do all his water changes with water he collects right from the ocean. jackri got it a little mixed up.
As for any of this dealing with your new stand.......your right. It has nothing to do with the stand.

LOL thanks for the detailed explanation. I have abandoned the sand from the sea idea....though doesn't the sand from the pet store come from the sea? I know its a deep special place. I do think I understand now better than before and Im just poking some fun at the sand idea.
Thanks for all the great input. I know have to start plumbing the tank and that brings on many more questions. So who wants this one???? I know it cant be that complicated but it is new.
(1) So do flex lines make better since for flow from tank to sump and then sump back to tank?
I wont have a CLS, at least not at first.
(2) Is there any issue to having my skimmer a distance from the sump? As in 12" to 20 "?
(3) At what point in the system will you put a UV Sterlizer? Will that come before the skimmer I would think? I would also think that the flow would could be an issue from the tank to the sump/sterlizer. Is a UV Sterlizer overkill or best practice for a newb?

I myself would not put a UV on untill it was needed. That is just me.
I don't see an issue with the distance from the sump to the skimmer.
Flex line....A matter of preference I guess. It is a lot eaiser to install that is for sure. I myself like PVC, as it is a more solid connection. I like the ability to make the plumbing look a little more neat. I also just like the industrial type look of pipes and neatly ran wires. Your tank is pre drilled right out the bottom so I don't think it really matters for you. You have real simple runs.
Oh yea, If you have thought about or are thinking about a closed loop....Then drill it now. You don't want to have to drain and break down a happy system to drill some holes.

Good point but I just dont know if I am ready to drill a tank that has never had a fish in it. Is that chicken or what!

I was nervous too. But after all went well with the first hole.......Oh a whole new world opened up.

Well its probably a mistake but I wont drill it for now. Ill look to other solutions for flow until that time comes to go for it and then I will go big. May drill that sucker twice. I usually am not hesitant but this being my first its got me.
On another good front I thought I had made a mistake in making my canopy. I want 48 t-5 lighting but thought I had really messed up when the inside of the canopy came in at 47". Went to my LFS today and got some measurements that made it all ok. Found T-5 VHOs that with cap and all finished out at 46 3/4. Thats a whole 1/4 of room. I knew I was to smart to make a mistake.

That's what I hear.............mostly from you.

On the closed loop, You can do one without drilling. It will just be a lot more clean looking if you drill. Also if you drill for a closed loop you do have to go big. You will be putting in at least 5 holes. This way you can at least do a 4way OM.

What are you doing with the back? I vote before you get to far to get it painted black or blue,, just my 2 cents, your gonna have lots of cords and hoses back there....

Yea I am going to do something. I bought a blue background just because I didn't want to commit to black or blue until I was sure.
So let me hear from the group.
Good reasons to go with BLACK?
Good reasons to go with BLUE?

I myself like blue as it looks more natural IMO. If you were diving and looking at the reef off in the distance would not be black.

Both of you make a good point.
Posiden - the all natural look!
Meowzer - I just like it better

Im wondering whats the difference anyway its all gonna get covered with stuff anyway.
Leaning at this point to Blue. Talk me out of it.

Talk you out of it...LOL....Black makes the stuff show up more...and it takes a while for it to be covered anyway..
does that help

How can you do a closed loop without drilling? I have an established system but would like to add more flow withour more ugly powerheads? Would be very interested, have never seen anything like that.

It may or it may not get covered up. It depends on how you keep your tank. The 75G that I am planning and very slowly building
will have the rock work hide and show the back. So I will do a blue background and keep the exposed area clear of anything. So it will remain blue on my tank.

I will only have this pic up for a very short while. I don't have permision to use it. Quite a few of you will recognize it from another site.
I love this tank.
