I used to raise Bettas when I was in my teens. I used a 10 gallon tank. I had a turtle bowl inside the tank to house the female and the male was in the 10 gallon. This way the male could see the female to get enticed but could not get to her. This also encouraged him to build the nest. Then I placed the female in with him until she laid the eggs, then she was returned back into her bowl. The water was only about 4 or 5 inches deep, (lower than the top of the bowl)thats all that is needed.

I lowered the water two maybe 5" and the breeding is continued. They are still seperated and the nest has not yet been built but you can now see her egg tube and he is constantly pacing her cup.

Ok, the bad news. The first male i tried didnt work. The female was 100% ready but the male was not. After releasing her into the tank he didnt even flare at her. This confused her and she chased him around kinda looking like "*** are you doing???" So i switched the males. Hopefully this time it will work.

well im starting to get a little concerned. I switched out the males and the new male has lost interest in the female. i starting to think the tank is just to big.

Too open IMO try putting in a bunch of fake plants (or live ones) to make it more like their natural environment, cram packed with plants. it'll make it harder to see whats going on but it will make the betta feel more secure.
