Ive been tagging along too. Just don't want to clutter up your thread.

I know I only have 3 tiny pieces of coral frags but I've become very attached to them. I cant Imagine what your loss must be like

I'm super glad there are survivors though!

When I noticed those first little green star polyps open I was like a little kid, I counted each one. Because some did survive, it eased the blow of what happened, and all my fish were okay. A total crash..I don’t know how I could stand that, may it never happen.
I am sooo glad I have GFCI outlets on everything to my fish tank. I had a heater break years ago (freshwater) and I lost most of my fish.

I could not handle a total crash now. Perhaps with a lot more experience I could manage. What you lost I think would crush me. So much time and care and experiences. It almost makes me afraid to get too carried away with coral keeping. But then I take a peek at my first frag and try to picture how it would look in ten years and start wanting more. Is a tank crash something that is bound to happen eventually?
You have a very positive attitude towards this and I think pretty important in this hobby. I didn't at first but I'm quickly learning the ways...

Flower so hows your tank doing are you thinking of geting sps ?
SPS...oh dream..yes..I may try..

.Hey Pirates…read through the last few posts..I gave an update, thanks for asking.
I love keeping fish and I love my corals. I won’t quit until I physically can’t handle it anymore, and then I would try and pay someone to care for my tank before letting go….LOL
My very first paycheck from Taco Bell 30+ years ago was on a 10g fish tank. I haven't stopped yet.
No I don’t think a total crash is inevitable, in computers yes, but not a fish tank. However stuff happens and we must do our best to be prepared. This site is so great because there are people here to help in an instant. I was lost when things first happened, and they helped me keep my wits and think things through.
Being on this site, and getting to know all of you here is the best thing I could do to keep my critters alive and well...
Thank You everyone...You are GREAT! I'm glad your here!

Hey Flower....if I wore a hat...i would tip it to you....LOL....I really don't know if I could do what you are doing....I have nightmares sometimes about the 225G and a crash :( It is taking me forever to accomplish anything cause I have to do it slowly and with frags....I think I would probably toss a few things in the 29 and 54 and RUNNNNNNNNNNNNNN

I am off to work...
I only have the one tank, I’ts my dream tank. A coral reef. I waited until my children were grown to have it. I can’t let a broken heater take something away I have been wanting for so long. I spent 18 years visiting the same fish store with a coral tank. I have been reading and getting ready all this time. I can do this, I know I can.
I don't care if it is a frag or full blown happy huge coral....its coral, its saltwater...for me it is joy and I love it.
Because of folks like you, Spanko, Lovemyreef and everyone else who pitched in while I tried to save my critters, I still have my joy...It would have been worse without you guys.

Very good to hear flower!!! I'd really be bummed if my tank crashed right now... a couple small frags and two fish and small CUC... I'd be crushed.

Thanks for the update. I'm glad to hear that things are not quite as bad as they first seemed. I know a lot of us were horrified when you initially thought that all of your coral and inverts were gone. It's nice to know that some of them are making a come back.

My Zoa are out, the eagle eye is very small but has some pink showing inside the skirt and the dragon eyes are showing skirts. The ammonia isn't climbing and staying in that .25 range, and it looks like not a drop of hair algae survived...

I'm new to this forum, but I've read your issues with your tank, and I'm very glad to hear that all is not lost! I had a beautiful tank before Hurricane Katrina, and I lost the whole thing. So sad! I'm so glad your tank has recovered!

Thank you, I'm so sorry, to hear of your loss, how devastating...have you begun again on a new tank?

Yes! I have just set the tank up (55g) with the old dead rock (about 50 lbs), and I've just added two pieces of new live rock and about 45 lbs of live sand to get the cycle started! I'm super excited about it!

I bet...Welcome to the site, and keep us posted. Are you going for fish only or a reef?

I had FOWLR before, but I had always intended on eventually keeping coral. I will start with the fish and inverts like I did before, and hopefully add some eventually! I feel very "green" about coral as I've never kept them.

Can anyone tell me what the perfect range temperature should be for corel and fish?

There are no perfect for all temps. You have to research each critter you add to the tank, be it fish, invert or coral then try and match their needs. Making sure that what you introduce can live peaceably and happily together is what good reef keeping is all about. Basic needs of salinity, temps and environment (rock, sand etc..etc..) all play a roll.
I recommend you chose a favorite critter, and set up the tank for its best interest and get tank mates that can live with that choice.

Thank you very much . But my tank is enclosed and is sometimes hitting 83, it seems like the corels are doing well but I lost the first two I bought(I am just starting). I can always put in a fan and lower the temp by a few degrees. Any thoughts.

That’s what I keep my temps at…water condition is most important. Keep Nitrates below 40, and no phosphates. Running carbon keeps coral from fighting. My first and most favorite coral was a lettuce coral frag, and they are very hardy. I always liked Xenia too, both are great beginner coral.
