Veni, Good catch! Glad you and everyone else is ok- looks like damage was pretty minimal! Fires are no fun (we actually woke up in the middle of the night because of the light and snap-crackle-pop). If your kids have soot covered toys be sure and grab them and clean them up before the contractors toss them - we didn't and I still regret it to this day. Hopefully your tank isn't affected by the lack of electricity. Union electricians or not, I'd be blaming the inspector - and he's not a union member - he's a government employee. Is you fire department volunteer or full time? Either way give em a pat on the back - nice save.

Must have been union work............ZINGGGGGGGGGGG.
Thanx everyone for their concern. After further review by the Fire Marshal and a qualified Union
electrician. It has been determined that over the course of many years of add-ons and remodels, I have a conglomeration of very bad DIY projects that will require significant electrical rewiring. I will add by saying to you Darth i know that even a qualified Non-union electrician would have never done what i have been informed of and now have had the opportunity to see.BTW i fully expected this from you

actually, working at Home depot it looks like some of the DIY projects some of the customers come in and are doing...we try to explain why they are doing it wrong....but they never listen. You would not believe how many times this christmas I had customers come in asking for male to male plugs for extension cords....some of them even bought things to make them........once had a guy come in installing a 220 line in his home.......he used 20 guage wire because it was cheaper.

Damn! I hope your insurance company will pony up for the electrical rework but I got a feeling your going to get stuck with it.

off topic
but I had a guy come into oreilly auto one day and ask where the starting fluid was because his truck wouldn't start. So I went over and got him some starting fluid. Then I took a peek into the parking lot to make sure it wasn't a diesel. Sure enough it was a power stroke. So I put it back and got some wd-40 and handed it to him. He flipped out and demanded I give him starting fluid. So I got ever person that was working and we all told him this is what you can use. But you don't want to use starting fluid. Then explained why. We friggin had several of our installer customers there and explained that to him to. Well he got really tick, and grabbed the normal starting fluid off the shelf and demanded we sell it to him. After ten minutes of arguing with him, and explaining to him again what would happen. We a whole bunch of corporate people and they said

[hr]
it sell it to him. But write something that absolves us from any culpability when his heads blow off. Which he signed to spite up. Anyway, he then proceeded to spray the WHOLE can into his intake. And when he started the car, his engine EXPLODED. His manifold was about 20 feet away. And his truck was destroyed.
That was one of the funniest things I've ever seen a stupid person do. Needless to say, he was really embarrassed when he came back in to use the phone...

So Veni, what are you estimating the damage at? I see the ceiling, etc., but did the smoke fill up the whole house? That can be a nightmare with the smell and soot...
We joke, but this could have turned real serious, real fast, and it could have happened to any of us.

electrical wise i don't know yet.No structural damage ,pretty much cosmetic. a few bats of insulation,2 sheets of dry wall ,few coats of mud primer, paint......The insurance adjuster is supposed to be here at noon tomorrow.
The smoke was confined to the attic so we shall see if we are going to have to Kilz everything or not.I dont know if the smell is going to linger once i get the ceiling closed back up.
PITA.But thankful none the less.

Yeah, I would be checking everything too - I wouldn't be able to sleep either. Then again, I'm a natural insomniac to begin with!
I'm glad everyone made it out safely.

Have you ever seen what a restoration company does. It is pretty dang cool. They'll "sandblast" the item with dry ice. And it freezes the soot off the item. Then mechanically blows it off.
