nice AV, Alix. I'm with you it's a long drive to the northwest side of Akron just to buy salt. (With shipping the Drs was cheaper.)
Good to hear it's not closing

what LFS do you go to in akron? i like 2 turtles, although the management kind of sucks and the prices are pretty steep. coral reefs (the new one) is pretty nice too.

I go to Two Turtles in Akron on occasion. There's a new Coral Reefs? Are you talking about the place on Killian Rd on the south side of firestone? Are you closer to Two Turtles or Wet Pets? Know any details about the new owner of WP? I hope they do more saltwater than they have in the past. I have actually purchased better stuff at "deathco". I must say, I will probably order all my salt online, with shipping it's $10 cheaper. It seems the only way a LFS can be competitive is to sell online as well as "in the neighborhood".

ahh i was confused. im closest to coral reefs on killian rd, but its a total crack shack. i even told my mom BEFORE going in that if we didnt see anything we like we could probably buy some drugs or a gun there.
it was pretty bad. all the fish had ich, but the corals (what they had) looked ok. i was thinking of sea caves aquatic interiors on exchange street in akron, that the new store. it is soooo nice. plus the guy that owns / runs it is really helpful. everything there is very clean & looks healthy. thats actually where in taking my 75 to have it baffled out. im pretty close to two turtles too but i dont go there very much, because they dont have very good selection & the prices are pretty high. some of the workers there are pretty cool about underweighing LR and stuff though, and tossing some extra hitchhikers in the bags.
yeah i hope the new wet pets plus owner is more into salt also, because thats only about a half hour away from me, plus were at the strip alot, so its convenient.

Well I asked if he was keeping the saltwater and he said he was. From what he was saying I got the impression that he wanted to have a better selection. He also mentioned he wanted to "Un-clutter" the store. I also remember him rambling something about changing the name to Something Emporium, Im not sure I kinda was drifting off because he was talking forever. Im just glad there still will be a saltwater dealer near me.

Well heres a rather weird update. I went into wet pets today and the new owner had rearranged most of the dry goods. The weird part is that on the left hand wall once you walk in the front door, has all kinds of miscellaneous items on it. I went over to get a closer look because I couldn't believe my eyes. A list of items I can remember of the top of my head are:
Nail Clippers (Human Not Animal)
Sponges (Dish Sponges not Invert Sponges)
Battery Powered Radios
Latex Gloves
Cloth Work Gloves
These weird glove type things that go one beer bottles
Duffle Bags
Chap Stick
And more random "junk"
I am so confused.
I asked the Old owner Jon if he (the new owner) was still going to keep the store a pet store and he said the new owner was trying to find ways to make extra money.
Im not quite sure how this will turn out. I can only hope for the best.

The downward spiral may continue.
Get rid of the old geezers and get someone in there who is aggressive.
We don't need MARC'S or DOLLAR TREE selling fish.

Haven't been there for a while, spent all my fish money on a moped for my son that I seem to be riding more than him (after dark of course). So I don't have any reason to go in.

It's pretty bad for all live fish stores right now. People are more tight with their budgets because of high energy bills as well as recovering from back to school stuff. It's a seasonal thing.

Well according to a few lfs around here, the good months are the winter time! So hopefully they get their seasonal bump....

Just found out yesterday that my favorite lfs is closing as well. Unfortunately, they want WAY too much for their equipment. They told me the prices on a couple of their tanks and I said nevermind.

I actually live in Massillon too. John and Wet Pets have always been so-so in my eyes. I mean a nice enough guy, but they never really had very nice fish. Seems like everyone I ever picked up from there kicked the bucket. The three fish I have in my tank now, who have been around for almost six months each came from Coral Reefs (yellow tang; figured he had ich, but ran him through the QT for a month and he ended up being just fine), Two Turtles (big tomato clown; has been awesome) and a firefish from there as well.
When I went to Sea Caves (this was the old one), he told me that I could have a yellow tang and gold rim tang in a 55 gallon and that they would be fine.
Mind you this is when I was WAY new, and didn't know any better. But that should give you a little insight into whether he is more concerned about selling fish or keeping them alive.
And coral reefs on Killian... I actually like that place a lot. The lady really knows her stuff, and won't sell to people who repeatedly kill fish. The decor is from the 70's no doubt about that. And yes, a lot of their fish have ich. (But what store's fish don't?) But she knows and tells you that. And you should be running a QT anyways, so it really shouldn't matter.
If you get the chance, there is this place up on the SE side of Cleveland. It's in Columbia Station... Called Aquatic Technologies I believe. It's this HUGE old greenhouse, and they have TONS of stuff. Really cool fish, coral, inverts... you name it. They are a little pricey. But they def have some cool stuff. Worth the hour drive from Massillon in my eyes.
Anyways, that's just my two cents

how far away do you live from dayton? i know there's a coup;e of nice stores around that area. if you're intrested, i can try to look up the names for you. i went to a couple of them before. they're not that bad if the drive isn't too far.
