My prob with Noobs

I think we should have a message on the top of each section of the boards (excluding the Aquarium) saying something like: "Search before You Post". I mean, this site has an archive section for people to look at. I am tired of people coming on and asking how to get rid of algae, when there are 20 stickies about it in the archives.

well your not far off from a Noob yourself.
You know what i hate..is the people that keep spewing out the word search. So what they ask a question thats been asked before. I will always ask again before a search. Hell most the time when you even do a search you come back with crap.

I admit that I hate seeing repeat subjects but cut people some slack man. If you don't like seeing those threads, don't open them...
I always search before I ask. If I didn't I'd have 1000 posts already. I just don't see a point in complaining when it happens in all forums, and you can just ignore them.

yeah and i just recently made The Archive thread in the seahorse forums with valuable posts made by all the helpful seahorse experts in the seahorse forums. that anyone can look at. and yet people ask the most simple questions that take 1 google search to find. i don't get why someone says there about to go buy something and then asks "but what do i feed them".

In my experience, almost half of the questions answered from noobs results in an excellent dialog and some new information. The future of this hobby is dependent on Noob questions. Otherwise we begin to think we know it all... and we certainly don't!

i dont mind it so much, because while the search is a good & useful tool, you do get a lot of crap, old posts, and irrelevant info.
for example - do a search for "sun coral feeding" the search cuts out "sun" (because its too short) so youre really searching for "coral feeding". and you end up with about 1 million posts like:
- my tang has ich, ive got blah blah blah in the tank, and im feeding twice a day
- you have to do hypo
- will that hurt my brain coral?

also, a lot of people (myself included) are hesitant to post on old threads, like from 2003, so even if they do find some info, they may not get all of their questions answered.
i say that if you have a question, at least try the search first, but if you need more info, dont hesitate to post a question asking, that what this board is for!

I think this is funny for a number of reasons.
The OP is what I would consider to be a newbie.
This type of thread pops up about every six months. (Soon there will be the dreaded "Why was my post deleted, you are violating my first amendmant rights!" thread.)
If people stop asking questions, even the "stupid" questions, then there will be no need for this forum, then where would we all be?
Yes people should use the search button first, but think about it. If you have never heard of cyano, how would you know to search for it.
I think what we need around here is a thread devoted to some deeper subject. How about we start a religion thread for once........

the whole "noob" thing bothers me more than the repetitive posts. how do you know someone is a newbie? maybe theyve been in the hobby for 20 years and they are a professional aquarist, and they just found this board a week ago?

Yes but identifying a newbie isnt hard. They tend to ask questions related to how many fish they just bought for their 30 gallon tank, its all dead or dieing.

i understand that. im just saying why judge someone by their post count? if they have 20 posts and just put a shark in a nano, yes an obvious newb. but if they have 20 posts and seem to know a lot, why get irritated when they ask about some algae or something? no one knows everything.
anyways, thats besides the point. sorry nano.

Yes post counts mean nothing...someone reached a milestone of 1,000 or 2,000 post recently and three quarters of those are "bump", "do you like my pics", "nice tank man" and so on.

I love seeing new posts.
That reminds me our hobby is groing, SWF has a potential new customer, and there is someone else coming into our community.
Do the same questions about cycling, sand, live rock, Tangs in nano tanks, and what fish should I add next questions get old? Sure; but all you need to do is move past em...
