MY Tank Build Diary!

I think you should get the 800 - although you only need 550 - the heater won't be working at its maximum capacity all the time if you go with a smaller one, see what Shawn says.

i was told that I would need AT LEAST a 800W heater for my 180 after I factored in a 55G sump and a 40G refugium that are also attached to the system.

Larger heater won't have to run as long. Equipment is going to help regulate temperature as well. Reef tanks usually have alot more equipment running and therefor I feel the larger heaters aren't always needed as the manufacturers would have us believe. But you surely don't want to go to small. A heater that runs constantly is probably going to have a shorter lifespan. I have a 400w in my 50g that virtually never turns on because the equipment 2 pumps and 4 powerheads as well as ambeint room tempurature is keeping the tank at 78-80. If you're keeping the tank in a basement you should probably go with a larger heater.

I use the base figure when figuring heater sizing as 3-5w per gallon......Usually I stay on the lower end of my rule, but yeah a 800w on my 240, and the heater barely runs, and I keep the room at 62.....

See the thing with the stealth is you never know when it is on or not

The Ebo Jagers have the red light, and I have them in 2 tanks....they come on periodically but not for really long....the heater I have in my 10G I forget what it is....some glass something or other...LOL...but that also has a red light, and that comes on periodically too
Do the titanium heaters with the controller have lights????

Yes it has lights on the control unit to let you know when the heater is running (red light) and when it is not (green light)

Scott - i have to ask again - DYDYT
Everything will be done this Thursday Al. The tank and the electric.. It sucks that I have to depend on other people to help and do not show up when they say they are going to.. I wish that some of you guys lived closer to me because I know that all this would have been done by now and the DT almost cycled lol...

Well I went to my Not So LFS tonight (Blaming it all on Meowzer) To see if they had some hermit crabs to put in my QT for now so it was not empty well I got 3 of them for the tank. Then they had a few pieces of LR that I like and one was covered in purple and looked nice I asked the Girl what was on it and she said it was Coraline Algae so I said cool I will take it. Then there was another piece that I liked and got that also it was bigger. Well the Rock that I was told had Coraline Algae in fact is not Coraline Algae but star Polyps they were open only a little but now are closed because I think they are mad LOL. Well then I had the lights off on the tank and went looking and there was this strange little fish in the tank and I was like WTH is that.. So I looked at it and it looked like a goby of some kind. Well The only one that I can find that looks like it is a Bluespotted Watchman Goby and it must have hitch hiked in the bigger piece of LR that has a hole in the side of it. Here is a pic of the Goby.. LOL The good thing is that I only Paid $22.00 for what I bought at the store.. LMAO their loss my gain I guess!!!
