I am on cloud nine!!!!! Two days ago my friend and next door neighbor, Beth, help me moved my 55 sump upstairs. Through out the moving process I apologized about any strange smells that might offend her in the tank and equipment. She said "No problem."
After the tank was put back together, she commented on how neat the tank looked. I said, "it's just a sump and won't have much in it."
"I still like it, the landscaping is really pretty."
Half teasing, "I said I have plenty of tanks if you ever want to set one up." She looked through a few of my books and looked at the SWF fish and other items. And then she headed home for dinner.
Yesterday morning at 10:30 am, Beth calls...
"How far is your LFS?"
...??? "uh...about a half hour away."
"Do you think we could make it back by 2pm.?"
"Sure, I'd love to show you around."
"Well, I've decided to take you up and set up your 29g."
Her husband, Kevin, had frowned upon the tank setup and told me just before we headed to the LFS, "You've corrupted my wife!!!" Now, I know that Kevin loves pirates. I had an ace up my sleeve!!! I have a sunken Pirate ship decor for aquariums!!!!!
We spent and hour and a half getting everything for her tank.
After much consideration this is what she got for her tank:
1 decorator crab
7 dwarf blue legged hermit crabs
12 lbs Figi LR
3 lbs live rubble
Pack of plants
40 lbs Aragamax Sand(DS)
I gave her 2-3 lbs of my stored LS. We set the tank up in about 3 hours. Her kids love it!!!!!! We spent over an hour watching the BL hermits try out new shells and fight over dinner. One of the shrimp pellets rolled under the decorator crab. When the hermits tried to swarm that, the d. crab fought off the tiny raiders. The d. crab also added a tiny shell from the tank to his decor collections! I finally headed home with Aria and enjoyed and my new goodies to my sump. I bought 3 new dominoes, so I have a total of five now. I had also purchased a beautiful piece of Tonga LR. I watched my new school settle in last night. With larger numbers the dominoes no longer hide in the LR. I also noticed a small growth of coraline on the side of the tank glass. I love our hobby! I very blessed being able to share it with my friend next door.

Neato, we found one tiny brown-blue button polyp in Beth's new tank. I helped her to move it onto a piece of rubble. I also squished two tiny aiptasia anemones I found. I put them in a bowl to help her ID any future appearances of these little fiends.

Please don't tell her about all of us. Bring her in slowly.
Pat yourself on the back for getting another one addicted.

No worries
Beth confessed that she was up until 1 am watching her tank last night. We spent the majority of the afternoon combing through SWF.com. I also helped her sign up today here online.

It's so cool to bring someone new into the hobby, isn't it? When I swapped my reef tank for the bigger one, I gave the 55 gallon to a friend of ours who has been toying with the idea for a while. I sent her home with the tank, stand, a cheapie cover&light, and a LOT of reading material. And, of course, the address to this website!!
Rykna, is your friend interested in any particular SWF? Horses, perhaps???

Mine was interested more in "normal" SWF, so I suggested starting out with a FOWLR before going further. We gotta wean these newbies gradually.....sloooowly suck them in..........

So far Beth has read a lot in the book I lent her. She was pouring over tank cycling today. She keeps changing her mind as she reads more and more about the needs of each critter.
She was watching her decorator crab this morning. The little guy marched over to the closest clothing store, snipped off a piece of the new plants she had just put in, and arranged it on one of his legs. I'm hoping I can help her get some pics posted soon.

Cool! I didn't read the entire thread, what type if critters is she thinking about? Nothing like a couple false percs with a plant pot in the rockwork to start with

Well, she has 29 gallons to work with. She already has a few critters in the tank. She was trying to decide her next step. I suggested if she wanted more selection she should upgrade the light and get a larger filter.

There is still lots of options if she doesn't want to spend too much. Some of the low requirement fish can be some of the coolest, like clownfish. Very interesting, breedable, etc.
Unless she is wanting corals and stuff. There is alway non-photosynthetic corals (not as pretty tho..)

For a beginning tank, I think itd be awesome for her to get some green star polyps, maybe a kenya/colt coral, and some nice, colorful, hardy fish :) And all of the above are usually available very affordably as well. Just an idea though, depends where she wants to go with things. As long as she doesnt jump in too fast haha
I love bringing people into the hobby. I have a lot of my friends over for "guys night" and all that, and they all love the tank. They know the names of most of them by now and what they look like when theyre happy and open. Funny how one of my buds will come in and be like "I saw that laser fish (sixline wrasse) nip at the anemone one (duncan coral)."
