Just wondering - how difficult is it to have an octupus? ... large tank with good filtration only? Do you need certain lighting? Any certain nutrient supplementation?
And since they only live for a year or slightly more - but get as big as 2 feet long - do they grow up quickly? It sould as though you would have a monster on your hands eventually...
Awesome stuff man - I can't imagine what your house looks like with all your tanks. Your house must be huge!

Octopus require a specific setup, there can be no way of escpae for the octopus otherwise it will, for smaller kinds like the dwarf octopus the filters must be covered so that they aren't sucked into the filter, they eat live stuff like crabs and other things, need a species only tank, and I don't believe that they require any special lighting.

They aren't that difficult to keep. You need a fairly secure tank, good filtration, and not much for lighting. I am using flourescents on the tank. I feed frozen krill and silversides, and raw shrimp. For treats I throw in hermits or emerald crabs every once in a while. I don't think that they are that fast growing, maybe an couple of inches in lenght.

Are Crush, Clyde and Marcus still doing OK? I just read the whole thread.

After I have read this thread and finished reading some more material I am convinced I will buy another tank and setup just for an octopus, !!
Crush is very very pretty, my fav :) I love your work Goodwin, a+!
Just curious though, what species is shipped if you order through SFW.com. On the order sheet it just says "octopus"

I ordered this Octopus from SWF.com. Here are a couple of pictures of the sump/refugium he is staying in at the moment. Water flows in on the right through a spray bar and drains towards the center section through a series of teeth. I'm pretty sure he is big enough not to be able to get through the teeth. Top of the refugium is completely covered with the light sitting on top.
What size tank do you have? That's a big refugium.

I asked a number of people through photos to help identify the species and the majority said that they are Bimacs (Bimaculoides) Since I am not an expert, this is the best answer that I can give you. I assume that they knew more than me....
