NFL draft thread!!! ESPN reports, Stafford's the guy...

We all knew this was going to happen. They signed Aaron Curry to a backup deal, (in case nothing could be worked out with Stafford). Curry agreed to take less than Jake Long last year so he could go #1. Apparently the deal is imminent with Stafford, though.

What a waste... another 3 years of the Lions sucking. I guess if I could survive the last decade, then what's another 3 years???

Go ahead... talk about all the relevant NFL franchises. I hope the podium falls apart when the commish goes up to announce, "And for the first pick, in the 2009 NFL draft, the Detroit Lions select... CRASH, BANG, AAAAAAHHHHHHHHHH!!"

I actually think that Curry could be the most overall talented player in the draft. I'm def. not sold on stafford and to tell you the truth if I was going to go the QB route I would probably go with Sanchez. I would say I feel your pain with the Lions, but it's hard being a pats fan

its pretty much a done deal crimzy... its a good choice for the Lions... and then if they do pick up Manu - the LB from USC - they would have a reat 1st round!!! now only if they can take a couple 1st rounders and not drive em into oblivion...
im not too happy with the Bucs projected 1st pick... they have gone with secondary in the 1st round for several years now...

Ru, I can't believe you are in favor of this... you're SICK IN THE HEAD!! Stafford was not even the best QB in college last year, much less the best overall player. Colt McCoy, Sam Bradford and possibly Tim Tebow would be better choices next year. Lions had the WORST defense in the league last year and have a crappy O-line... meaning no running game and QB's getting killed. How could you think that this is a good time to take a questionable talent at QB, who will command around $40 million in guaranteed money?
QB's are a dime a dozen in the NFL. Good QB's always come available... look at Cutler, Brees, Warner, Favre, etc. In the next year or two, Leinart, Vick, one of the Cleveland guys... will be available.
You have to build a defense and O-line. With 3 picks in the top 33 picks, along with a good free agent or two, you can make great strides this year. Then next year you roll the dice on a better prospect.
This is not opinion... if you disagree, you're flat-out wrong.

youre entitled to your opinion man... its all good if you cant see out of the smoke cloud that covers your city...

i wouldnt take Sanchez (remember what happened last time the Lions took a PAC 10 QB???)... look at the last 4 QBs out of SC - they all SUCK in the NFL!!! the SEC is about the closest thing to the NFL in college... numbers wise of course Stafford wasnt the best... he didnt play in a cupcake conference... its the intangibles that bring his draft stock to the top... the kid is smart, runs an offense very well, has a very strong arm, can read a D, has pocket presence and he will be able to get the ball to CJ... there are plenty of rounds to get solid OL... or pick a couple up via FA...
BTW... QBs in the NFL are NOT a dime a dozen... if they were one of the 4 that your team had on the roster could have won a game...

Can read a D? Pocket presence? The knock on this guy is that he made poor decisions IN COLLEGE AGAINST WEAKER DEFENSES!!
BTW, Harrington was a better prospect coming out of college then this loser. He will definitely be a bust, (unless he goes to a team besides Detroit
).
And the Lions have gotten plenty of QB's... they just haven't gotten the right guys. They passed on Brees and instead got Kitna and JT O'Sullivan. They passed on Warner, didn't go after Favre, but instead went out and got Culpepper.

i want to see one article that states this... just ONE!!! and it cant be from a Lions Homer... every sports news media source from the middle of the college football 08 season commented on Staffords ability in the pocket and ability to pick apart a D...
but crimzy, just 5 years ago Daunte Cullpepper was the toast of the NFL and the supposed "next gen" QB... the QB of the future!!! it was a smart move to pass on Favre, and Wanner wasnt leaving Zona so how did the Lions "pass on him"???
Joey Harrington may have been a better prospect... he sure as hell wasnt as good as Stafford... you cant compare PAC 10 ball with SEC ball... there are consistantly 8 to 10 teams in the SEC that are ranked in the top 25... one MAYBE up to 3 ranked in the PAC 10...

How many more do you want? There are a bunch.
BTW, when I mentioned Warner, I was referring to when he went to Arizona.

I am glad I am not living in Detroit. The franchise just can't get it right. You need to build the lines first. No QB can complete a pass on his back and no
LB or CS/Safety can cover anyone in the nfl for more than a few seconds.
Gotta protect the QB on 'O' and get to the QB on 'D'.

Spare me the SEC Crap, they produce great defense and O-Line...The PAC 10 dominates the skill positions and always has. My once proud Washington Huskies had 5 starting NFL QB's in one week a few years ago (Both Huard's, Chris Chandler, Warren Moon, and Mark Brunell)
I will be back on this thread later, but here is a little proof from an old article

Up until 2 years ago the Pac 10 had the most players of any conference in the NFL despite being the smallest conference.

Strengths: Very strong arm, excellent size, good leadership skills, athletic
Weakness: Decision making, Turnover Prone, poor stat production
STRENGTHS
Arm Strength
Mental Toughness
Poise and Leadership
AREAS FOR IMPROVEMENT
Accuracy / Consistency
Decision-making
Stafford is an athletic signal caller who demonstrates the leadership qualities it takes to be an elite player. He has great awareness, and when he feels a rush from the weakside, he has the mobility to make a play on the run. He goes through his progressions nicely and locates the open receiver. He has a strong arm and a great sense of timing; he gives his receivers a chance to make a play. - Chris Steuber, Scout.com
this is what i said...
"the kid is smart, runs an offense very well, has a very strong arm, can read a D, has pocket presence and he will be able to get the ball to CJ..."
pretty damn close isnt it??? i didnt point out that he turned the ball over 33 times in college... so there it is... if an NFL QB coach will get him to work through his progressions and not force the ball he will be a fine choice...

I understand what Crimzy is saying, Matt Stafford could be a "bust"....The OL from Baylor is pretty much a lock successful player for years to come....I don't think Stafford is a bad pick, but he could be the next Akili Smith, Andrew Ware, or Jamarcus Russell.
I like what McShay said, he likes Sanchez to have a better career going to Seattle and backing up Matt H. for a couple of years than Stafford being in Detroit. Seattle is a good team with the wealthiest owner in sports and was the most injured team in football last year. Detroit is a grease fire that ruins potential great players.

this isnt anything i havent heard/read before... PAC 10 QBs are for the most part a flash in the pan... i cant deny that the PAC 10 produces alot of NFL players... proof is in the pudding...
take a look at this list over the last 10 years and point out the PAC 10 QBs and what catergories they are in...
http://www.fannation.com/blogs/post/...down-1999-2008
there is so many on there in the good stat side its baffling... (please note sarcasm in that statement)

you think Miami wished they would have taken Matt Ryan??? i bet they do!!! it typically takes a few years for an OL to develope as well... there arent many that step right in and dominate...
you never know what a draft pick is going to do... the smart teams take either the best athlete or take the best player to fit their needs... and right now the Lions need a QB... sure they are notorious for wasting top prospects, this is why whomever they choose is going to be under a HUGE spot light...

LOL, your proving my point Bro...Not saying they produce the top NFL QB's, though they have had their share of Hall of Famer's, I'm saying they produce the most NFL QB's....I.E., you don't make an NFL roster at QB if you are bad.
BTW a little math for your earlier comment about how many ranked teams the mighty SEC has vs. the PAC....Here are the final ranking for this past season
1. Florida (60) 13-1 1,524
2. USC 12-1 1,393
3. Texas 12-1 1,389
4. Utah (1) 13-0 1,375
5. Oklahoma 12-2 1,333
6. Alabama 12-2 1,157
7. TCU 11-2 1,114
8. Penn State 11-2 1,091
9. Oregon 10-3 1,011
10. Georgia 10-3 904
11. Ohio State 10-3 874
12. Texas Tech 11-2 867
13. Boise State 12-1 809
14. Virginia Tech 10-4 740
15. Mississippi 9-4 620
16. Missouri 10-4 549
17. Cincinnati 11-3 493
18. Oklahoma State 9-4 480
19. Oregon State 9-4 407
20. Iowa 9-4 250
21. Brigham Young 10-3 248
22. Georgia Tech 9-4 219
23. Florida State 9-4 217
24. Michigan State 9-4 179
25. California 9-4 116

4 out of 10 for the PAC......4 out of 12 ranked for the SEC, and the PAC went undefeated in Bowl games and USC would have walked on Florida. Am I missing anything
?
That said, the SEC is and has been the best football conference for many years, but talking down on the PAC 10 just makes you look silly....ESPN hates the PAC and gives them horrible press, remember the PAC 10 is the only big conference signed with FOX Sports.

Proving my point again!!!! Hindsight is always 20/20.....Think they were thinking about Jamarcus Russell when they took the O-Lineman? Atlanta had the best running game in the NFL last year, it made Matt Ryan look good, until the Cards shut down the run game and made Ryan look like a Rookie.

The SEC is so overrated its hard to say how their players will make out in the NFL. I would have thought Jamarcus Russel was a sure thing but he hasn't been exactly tearing things up.
By the way last 4 QB's out of USC that are in the NFL includes Carson Palmer who was doing good with Cincy till he got hurt and some nobody named Matt Cassel who wasn't good enough to win the starting job at SC

Exactly, and Matt Lienart will get his shot someday, can't call him a loser yet for being beat out by a future Hall of Famer like Kurt Warner. And too early to tell on Jon David Booty, he may be the guy in Minnesota next year.

I think Lienart will do fine, he didn't do that bad when he was starting and they were starting him way too soon.
As far as this threads subject I think the Lions should try to get a deal to trade down to a lower first round pick for a couple of players. They need so much they should be thinking quantity as well as quality.
