Noisey overflow

Hey guys, I have an internal overflow on my tank, and it is quite noisy. The water flows over the internal grate thats in place into the back section, there is a piece of pipe that comes up out of the water an makes a U back into the water, there is a quarter inch hole in the connection, thats where the water rains.
I was wonering if there is any way to keep it quiet, it seems to keep sucking air, an makes awful gulping noises.

I'm not exactly sure what this means.
Do you have a picture of the "U" that goes back into the water? I'm thinking there should be an anti-siphon hole near the top of the "U" that is clogged or absent.

I meant to say drain, my d key starts and stops working when ever it wants, there is an antisiphon hole but i'm thinking it might be clogged, I can get a picture when I get home.

Yeah, try to unclog it. The idea it to allow the siphon to suck air so the water doesn't start siphoning faster than the pump sends it out.
All typos are immediately forgiven by me. I'm like the typo king.

Haha, yeah I don't know whats going on, I'll be typing along and my D key will stop working, its only that key too.

I have the exact same kind of overflow on one of my tanks and it was also noisey. Turns out that the noise was comming from the hose that went from the bottom of the tank to my wet/dry filter. It was way to long and you could hear the water gurgling through it (it was like 2-3 feet long). I replaced it with a piece of PVC that was just long enough and no more gurgling.

I already replaced that long piece of hose about a month ago with a straight piece of pcv, I have two overflows hooked into it, and the overflow from glassholes thats on my refuge is quiet as can be, so I don't think it has to do with that.

Have you tried putting an air line or air valve on that opening on your down tube to try to vent it or adjust the air flow inside the pipe.....I know what NJbillyV is talking about....Submerging your drain line to deep in the sump will cause excessive noise....I ran into that problem on my overflow and took a bit to figure the noisy culprits.......

My setup is similar to that acrylic, but on the side of the pipe, there is a hole drilled that allows water to flow through it, and there was a vent hole up top with what looked like a straw in it.
Well all I did was took the straw out and drill the hole a little bigger, the back section filled up a little fuller and completly covered the hole with water now all I hear is my pump running.

How big is the hole in the side of the pipe.......Figured it was an air/water mix issue.....Good deal though!!!!!!

looks to be pretty close to a half inch hole, it seems like it just had to much air restriction, if I put my finger over the top hole now, the water level drops, and it starts making the gurgling noise like before. Now all I hear is the hum of my pump and the faint sound of water trickleing over the overflow!

Not exactly what I was talking about but will give you some ideas......

That is exactly what mine looks like. What does the size of the anti-syphon hole on the top of the tubes effect?
I get a fair amount of air from mine, it bubbles in my refugium even though it's under water. I wouldn't think the water comming out of the tank would have so many air bubbles. Any idea how to eliminate this bubbling, or even should I try to eliminate it. I'm trying to reduce micro-bubbles and also get less bubble froth in that section of the refugium.

It controls the amount of air getting into the pipe, I guess mine wasn't getting enough, so it was gulping for air, ever since I opened it up, it drains so smooth now! Now if I can just quiet down my pump...

To quiet the whole under-stand part of my tanks I buy 2' x 4' pieces of drop ceiling from HD, cut them with a sheet rock knife, and screw them to the back of the stand. Quites things down and looks kinda cool.
I'm still wondering how I can reduce the air bubbles comming from my tank into my refugium though.

I'm curious are there micro bubbles in your oveflow before it drains down to your fuge.......I get micro bubbles from my overflow and it's due to the height the water is dropping from the tank to the water surface in the overflow box......If your getting bubbles at that point it's going to carry into your sump/fuge area. The way to combat the micro bubbles in the overflow area would be an adjustment to your stand pipes in your overflow box.....
I get very minimal micro bubbles into the intake section of my sump.....Of course I use a filter sock on my siphon line, so I wouldn't notice anything there, but on my open channel (stand pipe) I have very minimal and by the time the water leaves the intake chamber they are dispersed......I also have an air hole drilled just above the water line in the sump where the air can be vented as well......
