Beautiful barrister bookcases there! I have one that belonged to my grandfather, an antique Barrister that's about 150 years old. My "new" bookcases have just been weaseled from my mother...handmade low bookcases that my OTHER grandfather made (her dad) for a collection of leatherbound classics that my dad passed on to me. My mom had those cases outside in her florida room, so I bugged her to either bring them inside or give them to me.
Other than our Torah and Talmud, we have very little in the way of non-fiction Jewish literature. I've been reading through a few of Michael Chabon's novels lately, though....if you've a few days to enjoy it, I'd recommend "Gentlemen of the Road." Very fun stuff.
My modern fiction tastes tend to lean towards the realms of Fantasy and some SF. This past year I've been doing a lot of research on the mythology of the British isles, as well as Norwegian mythology. Currently I'm going through a fantastic text about middle eastern myths concerning the Jinn.....it's an interesting subject, mostly dealing with pre-islamic cultures, but it touches a lot of early Jewish folklore as well.
I've never had a single spot where I could have all my books around me. I know I can't pull out all my magazines...they'd probably collapse and crush me if I tried! Mag subscriptions are one reason I'm SO glad to see the advent of things like the iPad and the Nook. But I'm really excited to be able to sit at my desk and have everything practically within arms reach! It doesn't hurt that the pipefish tank will be RIGHT THERE, too!
Is that your Seder plate there on display? Very pretty!
What they want to charge for good furniture is a crime. My mother liked to go to those estate auctions, I always felt weird about them, but you can get some beautiful stuff for a fraction of the cost. Thank you for the complement...That Seder plate was the first one I ever purchased..it has many fond memories attached to it.
I don't read as much as I used to, there was a time that I lived with a book in my hand. My late husband would fall asleep studying the Talmud. I miss those days, I still love the books and know the contents well, they are like old friends.
I also really liked the scary books...Koontz was a favorite, and Stephen King. LOL...I hated magazines and the newspaper, because I would see so much of it at work. Now don't get me wrong I read the news, but I hated the sheer volume I had to pick up on the train...you couldn't pay me to take out a subscription to any of them.
There is nothing like having your own private space, it's refreshing and relaxing to have a tank close by, the steady gurgling of the water is paradise. My bedroom is my sanctuary, I have my desk and SH tank in there...I also have a small bookshelf in there with the basic books I reference all the time......all at arms length.
