Old Tank Syndrome

Remote sand bed would be meaning running it separate like a fuge, but just sand....but it would be fed on the same lines as a fuge. Then as stated when time comes or arises, the remote sand bed could be taken off line, and not affect anything going on inside the DT. That was one of the major advantages of doing it remotely, that if there was an issue such as the 1 at hand, it could be isolated from the DT, till things were sorted out. The issue is space constraint for Flower, but a remote sand bed could easily be accomplished with a 5 gallon buck.

Another difference with the remote sand bed vs the fuge is the remote sand bed is not fed light as the fuge is for the macro purposes.

So this remote SB is NOT run thru your dt? You put sand in a bucket or small tank...and what....no light...just a filter or powerhead

It gets the DT water run through it. That's how it benefits the DT. No lights, no filter(it is a filter), no PHs.

A bucket or rubber made tote, trash can, is the cheapest and easiest way to go. So, if one is already running a sump or a refuge, you would just T off the drain and feed the RSB and then let it feed the sump/refug. Think of Spraty's setup. Where his refug is, one would just pile in a bunch of sand and nothing more. Well the critters of course. The other option is to pump water into the RSB and let it gravity back into the DT or the sump/refuge.

I am lost...I have a little in the tank refugium but it's too small to make a dent in my nitrate issue...I don't have anywhere else to put a tub, the tank takes up most of my living room...LOL... I don't have a regular sofa, just a love seat size. I wouldn't have that but the book cases fit under the Plasma TV.

I'm looking at putting in a sump...could sand be put in there?

Yes it could with the right design and setup you could run it that way.

If this would fit in under the tank, it would be perfect for ya Flower. It is my sump as it sits now. Ignore that floating bag. I havent decided if I am going to add whats in the bag.

Acrylic51 is helping me with a custom designed sump...The one you show me looks nice, but it's 4 inches too large. I like the fuge..LOL..too bad they don't stay looking that clean and nice.

Yea, not bad for finding it on ebay for less than 2 bills. If its 4" too long, take 1" out of the overflow/filter sock area, take 1" ouf of the refugium area, and then the final 2" out of the return area. This should accomodate almost all things. The return pump is way small and doesnt need that much area to work. the small overflow area would cramp the protien skimmer. And having a 1" shorter fuge wouldnt hurt anything.

You guys are talking about the sand shifter disturbing the sand bed. I have been taking my paramaters fairly frequently lately, my nitrates on AUg 23 were 20, Sept 1@ 10, sept 17 they were 10 today they were 5. Last water change Sept 8. I have notice that my gold head sand shifter is MIA which might explain my lower nitrates.

Maybe it is just a coincidence with me Meowzer, maybe the two new PH are helping as well, anyways pretty happy with the low numbers though. Water change this weekend.

My high nitrates is not all contributed to my goby, I lost everything in my sand when my heater broke. I can't REPLENISH the sand with the goby, he won't allow the little sand critters time to be established before he gobbles them up.

Meowzer has a refugium and I believe that has much to do with why she does not have high nitrates.

No deep sand bed can do it's job properly with a goby. They disturb the bacteria that feeds on the nitrates. At least that's how I understand what folks have been telling me.
