i got a better idea. you could buy a plain ticket once a months for a few years fly to chicago for the day. go the the shed aqureum, fly back the same day and get a nice experence with SWF. jk im guessing you spend more then that 10 Grand that is. you probly are looking at like $2000 for lighs and a whole lot more for the LR+LS. Btw you gotta make sure that the city will let you build something like that. (cuz its a major structor and all)

then make sure your basement is suited to hold that much weight. i think SW weights like 7lbs per gallon if i remember right.

Sounds like a very big project, You could always start making your own Live rock in the shapes you want, and just store it until you are ready. Good luck.

on that huge thing? i havent even begun to think about lights, its still in the early planning stages LOL except i know with the depth, im gonna have to run MH's cause its gonna be reef, so i know im lookin at an easy 10 grand alone in lights, if not much much more LOL
3 foot deep is gonna make lighting a bit of a pain im guessing LOL
and on top of that, its prolly 5 years down the road or so, once we get oru place, get settled, and have the money to set it up, even though the tank itself will be free, everything else will not be anywhere near free LOL
5 grand will go to salt just to start. The other 5 will go to water to fill it and keep up with evaporation for the first month...now to find more money to deal with all that excess moisture oh and need a liner...it will take a long time for that much concrete to cure I would think...PH issues...So I have read anywho
That is a project
Take pics
I would make it a species lagoon....One clown trigger

LOL id love to do that, is there a shark i can put in there with all of those nice peaceful community fish? since its the gf's brother who's gonna build the tank for us LOL free even, she's getting to pick the fish in there really LOL but, if i can manage it, im gonna get a shark an some rays if i can LOL
and when we do this, we're gonna check the floor first, and make sure the concrete is at 3ft thick, i know that the pads we used to park our big rigs on, weighing out at 105k gross lbs were only 2 ft thick, so, im guessin 3ft thick will be enough for the weight :D

With sharks and rays, you can't keep them with overly aggressive fish. They will eat small fish too. But with a tank that size you probably wouldn't have to worry too much.
Personally, I'd simply install an above ground pool with some acrylic panes for viewing. Just out of curiosity, have you though about what type of dehumidifier system you will use so the evaporation doesn't destroy your house? You should also realize that you will be spending about $2K on salt alone to get it started. Then you are talking about $10K or so on liverock. Lighting system will be several thousand also. Not to be critical but I hope you realize that the tank itself is the easiest, and cheapest part of such a system. With a free tank, you should still plan on spending about $25K without any livestock. Good luck.
