opinion: best first (peaceful) fish

have started some research on them and am a little weary of the Chromis (cause they are still Damsels).
and I don't have a host for the clownfish. I know that they can survive without it, but...I dunno...I do like them though
in reading the Conscienscious Marine Aquariast, I'm thinking of maybe adding either a Firefish (Nemateleotris magnifica) or a neon gobie as a possible first fish. thoughts???

Clowns really don't need a host. However... they are also Damsels... Fortunately the area that Clownfish claim is usually very small, like 1/2 a square foot. This makes them ideal for a captive environment.

firefish are better in pairs.
I say get a porcupine puffer. Peaceful as they come and they have a great personality

I have a pyjama cardinal that is the most laid back fish I have. We call him Bob and he just hangs out in one spot most of the day. He gets serious (read always hungry but not mean) when food is involved but very peaceful otherwise.

porcupine's are peaceful but will make a snack out of things that are small.
I would recommend a lawnmower blenny... completely peaceful and also very handy!!! :D

my lfs told me that the lawnmower blenny is caught by using poison(didn't specify) so they don't carry them. Not sure that's true of all lawnmower blennies...but...just thought I'd share.

I'd recommend either a Pecula Clown or a Watchman Goby, both are peaceful and stay small. I got a Pistol shrimp for my Gocy and its a trip to watch the antics they go through. Best of luck and I know you will enjoy the hobby.

chromis great choice and although a damsel, the least aggressive, and does not resemble a damsel in temperment at all, even less so than the clownfish. In fact are more peaceful than most other fish. But do best in small groups.
clownfish are great too, depending on the species, some can be aggressive
firefish, great and hearty fish, does best if kept in schools of five or more, if not you should only get one, a pair is not advised, unless they are mates. Purple firefish on the other hand are just as good whether paired or single.
Other than that, I would probably say Bang gai cardinal or LMB. As to the use of cyanide, cant say for sure, but ours is nearing 3 yrs in age and our LFS will not buy anything where cyaninde is used. i do realize she can say what she wants, but believe me, I know her and she will not get it for you if there is even a remote chance that cyanide was used. UNLESS it comes from a breeder that breeds the fish. She s a major conservationist.
If asked to get certain fish, she will come right out and say" I will not get those fish, because of the way the capture them in some areas", adn will explain to you. In fact, it was her who told me of the use not a BB.

I went with a tomato clown as my first. After 7 hrs in the tank, all he's doing is swimming in place. Is this normal?
(I have a lot of flow in my 90. I have 2-1200s, 1-900, 2-600 and the return line. I believe it's 13x turnover. The lfs didn't have this much flow.)

they can get to be agressive, especially if they are the first fish introduced.

VERY aggressive. Stocking around them often is not easy.

My first fish was a tomato clown and a yellow tail blue damsel. I still have them too. Although, I must admit that getting the clown was not my best choice ever (i made worst but...) Tomato's are great fish but not peaceful. But have fun... i hope everything works out for u.
