ithink if you look at her taxes paid as a percentage of income, yearly she pays a much lower percentage than you and I. Its one of the marvels I learned in college with a degree in finance. Rich people are good at keping their money

I don't think it would have made a difference. They are Americans first... but since you feel that way...ask yourself if our government would have stepped in more effectively and urgently if they were white or wealthy. If New Orleans were Malibu... it would be a much different story.... right?

Truthfully? I could not care less.
On the other hand, I donated a lot of time and some money to New Orleans. I want it back after they re-elected that idiot Nagin and they can just keep their "Chocolate" New Orleans for all I care. I never felt so used in my entire life as I have from those ungrateful SOBs.

You are right... but you also have to take in account that many of them are philanthropists(spelling
) Oprah, Bill Gates, Warren Buffet... gives or gave millions and billions.

Perhaps not. However, if our state & local officials had stepped up it wouldn't have been an issue. That said, I live in Louisiana and when a hurricane is threatening I don't need any government official to tell me to GET OUT OF THE WAY! But then that is another thread.

This disaster was much bigger than a state or local issue... The mayor needed the support from his state and federal government.... I agree he could have done a better job. but I can't blame him for the aftermath...and most of the things that predated the hurricane... He should have done a better job of evacuating... but again in this situation I would expect him to have greater support. This was a disaster across the board..singling the lowest person on the towdom poll is not the right person to blame...especially if they didn't have the manpower or resources

What did you eat for breakfast Bang??

Oprah stated that she felt that the girls in Africa were more needy that the kids here in the states. They were more willing to give anything for a good education and work extremly hard to get good grades. She also stated that kids here that have the best opportunities handed to them, they still are not interested in taking advantage of a free education. They don't want to work or apply themselves for anything. She was very clear in the beginning of this whole thing.

i just jumped in on this thread
i heard about the african school on the radio and saw the show she made
and from what i heard on the radio (not sure how reliable that is
)
the school had had lots of complaints about kids being abused and parents couldnt visit their children
i also thought it was funny that it costed oprah $40 million
and it only has 450 students
WHAT!
i mean, its her money but come on thats about $100000 a kid!
i hope this doesnt offend anyone

its not costing 40 mill to educate. She had everything built......classrooms, library, computer lab, science, dorms, gym etc.
She addressed just recently the person that was in charge, she is now facing charges.

Got a news flash for ya, they were. All the attention was given to those in the poor section of NO which was mainly black but a whole lot of people were nailed by Katrina.

Ol Oparah has a right to do what she wants with her cash. My only issue was building a fancy school. Why not built 2 or even 3 schools more modestly so you can help more people?

Does the current income tax laws permit an income tax deduction for contributions to foreign charities ?
