its a nice tank, but would youpls consider taking the tangs out and having a full on reef-would look awsome. as the tangs can grow to 10 inches plus so you have to take them out anyway, so if it was me , id take them out and put more rock in to build it up and hav alot of coral and inverts
we will probably end up bringing back one of the tangs....we came onto here because we didn't know and our lfs clearly told us it would be okay....we literally bought the fish at 2pm and was on here posting soon after!!!!
i agree with tara. a single tang will not last long in that tank let alone 3. tangs need long tanks in which they can swim back and forth. As you can see, your sailfin is already showing signs of disease which is probably because of stress. please rethink your stock list.
sorry i am not familliar with how the electricals can set it off, i know it can cause it but im not sure how
it is more likely that its the environment thats caused the hlle
and you really need to take all the tangs out rather than just one, as they will establish a teritory each and will fight untill one is dead , best advise is take all of them out
I'd seriously recommend upgrading to a long tank instead of investing into a new top. Your Tangs will not benefit from the top at all. Tangs need room to swim no matter how small they are. A cube shape like what you have has very little room for them.
Also please have the algae clip in the tank every single day with algae sheets on it. With no visible algae on the rocks to graze, they need the supplemental sheets on daily basis.
I have 2 Tangs in our 150 and 2 clips of nori every single day even though the LR has tons of natural algae.

does anyone see anything in the wiring that could have led to hlle in our sailfin
I seriously doubt it's electrical. It's the environment, diet and water quality that most likely is the cause.
What are your water parameters?
temp 84 (our heat kicked on, hence the open windows in the pictures...we're slowing getting that back to normal after lowering the heat), phosp 0.2, amm 0, pH 8.2, salinity 1.025, alk 5, ca 495, nitrite 0, nitrate 10
if parameters are as stated than the problem is either stress or poor diet. I second Spiderwoman that you should have the algea strips in the tank daily and not 2 times a week.
we are stuck with our sailfin...truly attached after many months of bonding. my husband and i are discussing returning the other two tangs (the purple and kole). when we were in the store we were actually there to purchase a coral beauty and the purple tang caught my eye. my lfs told us that because we already had one tang that in order to get another we had to have a set a three...hence the tang family. my husband and i agreed that we definately will be returning the kole tang. but it would it be horrible to keep the purple since the sailfin and the purple are swimming nicely and even rubbing up on one another....????
That rubbing up on one another is actually not what it looks like. That is not being buddy buddy, but more taunting and trying to threaten each other. At least that is how I've seen for example Damsels intimidate each other. First I thought it was being buddies... soon to find out it wasn't that after all.
the kole tang is going back tomorrow...that's a definate. we're going to keep our eye on the purple and make our decision in the afternoon...thanks for your help
Unfortunately a tang is always going to be stressed in a tank that small. Plus your tank is vertical and tangs need horizontal room to swim. My advice is to take all the tangs back and buy other fish that are better suited to that tank. Lots of other great fish to choose from. Later if you choose to upgrade to a 100+, you can buy tangs again.
Hi Vittoria - first off, the tank looks great and I think that you have done a great job maintaining it.
As for the stocklist that you have, I tend to agree with the majority on the fact that having a tang in anything less than a 125g tank is less than optimal.
On the other hand, your tangs look quite small, and seem to be doing well. IN the short term, your tank will suffice. I would give you less than 18 months before that salfin is 7" and is going to need a new home.
The reason that you have HLLE is due to the environment that the Salfin is in. It requires a lot of room to swim and a varied diet. I would suggest the following:
- Garlic soaked cubes
- Spectrum pellets
- Seaweed soaked in Selcon and Vitachem
- PE MYSIS shrimp
curious, what did the lfs tell you when you brought him back?
problem with swf is you look online or at the lfs.
see the awesome fish and impulse buy.
that part bites.would be nice if you could put what ever you want in your tank.but, this sport requires research and comprimise and a whole lot of patience.plus a fat wallet dont hurt either.
