yea most of it is natural so he really cant do to much other then mover the tank to another location. he really doesnt mind the algee issues. he wont listen to me about covering it up for a few hours a day. he says"its a waste if i can only enjoy it at night, i would rather clean it more to enjoy it the way i always have been" so i just give up and look at his fish

It is not true... you dont need a skimmer to have corals. Some tanks that are heavily fed benefit from a skimmer to help export nutrients but if your bioload is in check a skimmer isnt necessary, but it sure is nice to have.

Nope not necessary if you keep your bioload in check and do regular weekly cleaning of the tank as well as regular water changes.
But skimmers sure do add to the well being.

Pat - The tank is looking great. I started out in college with a 10 gal and clowns too, now I'm working on my 40 reef. Where are you at in Kentucky? I'm still looking for a good LFS with some good prices (and maybe somewhere with frags)

Find out from a science professor if you can get a couple gallons of DI water if they have their own system at the University you are attending.

If you have enough room to put a HOB fuge on the tank it wouldn't be a bad idea (plus it makes for another attractive tank to look at if you keep it up) The trouble will be finding a fuge small enough to fit. I had a 12 gal nano back in the day and found that just putting some macro algae in a sump chamber worked well with enough light. If you can get one of the submersible led lights and put that with some chateo in your hob filter I think that would work. I'm not expert tho - so maybe someone else sees it differently.
