What is so bad about CC?
It depends a lot on the CC and the goal of the substrate (if you have a goal).
Old worn, natural CC is fine as a substrate. Most will want some larger fauna like mini brittle starfish, Strombus alatus, Cerith Snails, Bristleworms, etc. to consume detritus. The problem comes with some of the commercial CCs that actually pulverize clam shells and coral skeletons to create CC. This substrate has a lot of sharp edges that can injure the larger infauna that help keep in clean. It can take years for the CC to wear down enough to be useful as a natural substrate.
If you're looking for nitrate reduction in a CC bed it will work but optimally you need a bed two or three times deeper than sugar sized sand to accomplish the same level of nitrate reduction.
