true, but with the advent of internet shopping you can buy a lot more and have alot more variety. I don't buy corals from a LFS anymore. The selection always looks either too sickly or picked over. Plus some places say good light, some places say less light.
You can bleach some corals if it is too intense and you don't realize and research first.
It think the bigger thing is that my post was in teh middle of your conversation...LOL.
I was responding to his 740 W MH question and didnt' see your post!

is the dif between mh lighting at 720 watts and the 48" 216W (4x-54 watt) Quad T6 Fluorescent Light Fixture .a $300 difference ? the mh are $379 and the t6 are $79

Higher wattage will be more intense.
You are pushing the light frequency to deeper depths with higher watted bulbs. I don't know where they are but I saw some recommended charts on wattage and tank depth.
If you have a shallow tank and use a very intense fixture, then your corals and stuff might as well be placed on Venus...

If you plan on going with Anemomes you will need at least the wattage that Mikeyjer is recommending.
I think that 740 Watts is just a bit much for a 55 gallon tank. I would even then consider the 150 Watt Sunpod for that length or possibly two 150 Watt MH Pendants.
However, if you use the other fixture recommended you get a wider range of light frequency that might bring out better colors in your tank.
740 Watts....wow...talk about an impending algae bloom!!!!!!!!

I have actually seen someone use like 250w MH's over a 55 before.....I personally think that's a bit much.....

48" 216W (4-54 watt) Quad T6 Fluorescent Light Fixture
sufficient for a 55 gallon tank ? i think the company is oddysey..its dirt cheap at $79...will that be enough watts and lighting for corals ? im scared to get the mh halide lighting for $379 the 740 watts would prob destroy my tank its only 18 in deep...
please advise

seemed like a good deal $379 free shipping no tax ....i hope its not too strong for my 55 gal tank...any ideas on how to keep the algae low or some good animals to consume it...another note will this kind of mh lighting and wattage power destroy my sponges in the tank ?
thanks

You sir are a waste of time and space

what you and nathan gotta understand is when you come somewhere and say "i've been doing this for 2 years, but here are all my newbie questions" it sounds ludicrous. i answered his questions and got other people involved as well. we found out that he's only been doing reef for 2 months or less, not 2 years. i don't have 6500 posts here by NOT giving out advise, but i've also seen tons of trolls asking the same questions.
nathan, you're right, i'm a jerk for worrying more about the fish's life than your wallet. i've spent more than you, a lot of people have. but you also gotta understand that there are a few in this hobby that care only about their wallet, and not the lives they are affecting by doing a salt tank.
I'm not sure why i'm the only one being called out for asking and saying the same sentiments, but good luck. looks like you've got a few threads and tons of questions answered.

oh and also, yea buckster, go run to your "other forums".
there's only one that i know of that is decent for any amount of info.
do you know the attitude that would have been received by this and his other posts? there would have been 50 posts calling the guy a troll in less than 1 minute, and NO ONE willing to help. instead, he's got two threads of over 40 posts each answering the questions and now hopefully nathan has a better grasp of what is going on in the salt tank.
had he posted anywhere else, nathan would have been crying from the treatment he would have gotten there.

a "troll" is someone who starts a new account and starts an inflamatory thread, such as i just added 5 anenomes and tons of fish and they all died.
i'll have to look at the other threads on the lights.

I think it just goes back to what i posted earlier. It's nothing against Nathan, and it isn't his fault, people just get sick of hearing the same questions. Look at the first few pages of this formus and most things are about lighting and nitrates - same damn questions every time. Again not your fault nathan and the thread now has evolved into something a bit more useful like what type of lights to get.
Back to the topic - I don't know a lot about that fixture you are looking into, but as dark said either on this thread or another one you will run into some heating issues with a MH. I have a 150 HQI MH on my 30 gallon, with no cover and i have to run a fan to keep the temp around 80. I think no matter what either system (MH or T-5) you will be okay the only issue is temperature. I think 700+ watts of MH light will definately cause a heating issue - but that may be something you'll just have to deal with after purchase ( something you really won't know until you try it). You may have to purchase a cooling system or a few fans.
Are there any fixtures that have maybe 300 watt (150 watt X2) or 500 watt (250 watt X2)? 700 seems excessive, but i'm no expert - i would think two 250 watt bulbs would be cheaper, more energy efficient (remember running 700+ watts of MH WILL INCREASE your energy will), and won't cause as much of a heating issue. If you can (as in the system you selected) get the blue LED's for night lighting - they are pretty sweet looking.
After rereading your post: I don't think the extra 4X65 watts is needed, what K is the MH? 10000k or 14000k?

Nathan,
Maybe you need to get someof your boys from the Brooklyn hood to visit some of these guys? Keep asking questions, use the forum and ignore the people that are not nice. If you stay in this great hobby, you will look back and laugh! There are some great people here who will go the extra mile to help!

Friends,
first off i want to apologize to any1 if my questions are stupid or i shouldve done more research the truth is i love fish and i love having a home aquarium i do lack alot of knowledge in this hobby of mine its one of many many hobbys i have.. im an established guitarist for just about 10 years now..i play alot of hockey and golf... amoung other things...thanks to every1 for providing me with info that i need its a quick easy way to learn a lot and if u guys think i should be researching well its not happening i try but theres just no time ...
most of my problems come from just trying alot of dif things i started 8 years ago with several tanks of freshwater...then after everything tanked,,, i took a few years off about 2 years ago i got into salt water and more intrested in marine aquariums i had a pretty aggresive tank with triggers , lionfish, puffers etc....oh yeh i forgot i had about a freshwater tank running with 5 pharanas (sorry cant spell lol ) for about 10 months until they were all getting to big for my 55 gal tank...) then i had a daughter and when she was 1 or so she loved watching finding nemo... she kept asking for finding nemo fish....to make her happy and make or try to make a beautiful home aquarium for her i switched to a reef tank with finding nemo fish ...for a week or two she was in heaven and happy which was my goal...so basically i went through so many dif changes and im trying to get the reef tank to work with corals and nemo fish...i had no idea what i was getting into,,, lol basically i spent 2k over the past couple of months.. is it foolish to spend that kind of money on something u know so little about yes but that how it is...i dont have the time with work to research...and every fish store says something else they all contridict eachother and alot of them take advantage of novices...
bottom line i havent slept much in 2-3 days or so since everything i bought died ..15 corals 6 anemonies and 12 fish all very expensive...no body told me when i was buying these items its too much at once....i guess they assumed it was all going in 1 tank....i would love to get my tank up and running for my daughter she loves the fish and i love it as well ...LETS ALL STOP SAYING THE WORD TROLL...FIRST OFF I DONT EVEN UNDERSTAND WHY PPL WOULD LIE IN A MESSAGE ROOM AND WHY THAT MAKES THEM A TROLL..WHO HAS THE TIME TO DO THAT IF ANY1 THINKS IM MAKING ANY OF THIS UP I CAN EMAIL THEM COPIES OF MY RECEIPTS..SO LETS GET THE TROLL STUFF OUT...
guys thanks for all the help...
im just riding out the storm and waiting for something to happen my tank is filtering i have no idea what a critter is or if there are any in the tank..i dont belive theres anything in it but a cleaner clam thats in the sand and doesnt move it might be dead i have no idea....the ph is fine the salinty is a bit low at 1.021 but with the daily water changes im waiting to put more salt in last so i dont waste any...i havent changed the water since i posted my first message trying to make my tank fully cycle the temp is 76-78f the nitrates are fine the NITRITES are getting better they were at 5.0 now after 2 days at 1.0 still way high the ammonia is still high off the charts im just waiting and hoping my water cycles completely and i can get back SLOWLY into making nice home aqaurium...again sorry for being so iggnorant with all my silly q's..but if i asked any of you how to play a series of minor arpeggieos i doubt any of u would have an idea what im speaking of ..or some leggato techs..or whats dorian or aeolian modes...or emg 81's i can go on and on forever...so lets all calm down and help everyone and i have no probs with any1 ur all helping me out alot.
best
Nathan
