Well Randy I decided while I was at the beach his morning (a perk when you live 15 min from the gulf of Mexico) I took a small sample of the live sand I will use for out refuge at the shore line. I will go about 100 yards off shore for the product I will use but I wanted to see what it looked like up close so I took a couple of hand full right at the shore line. And you can see it is a nice mix of sugar sand and some crushed shells. I wanted to stired it up so I could see how much silt was suspended in the water when to my surprise this is what I found.32 baby clams all about 1/8 to 3/16ths of an inch in length. Pretty amazing. It should be interesting to see what I get when I go off shore.
If you want and it is cost efficient find out the postage from 34119 to your home and if you like I am sure I can cull you out a few dozen clams for your projects

Joe that is cool! Wonder how bad the clams would affect calcium levels. Perhaps I should have you send me some to throw in my sump and see if I can get my calcium level down ~ then I could make up some clam chowder
. Might have to take you up on that offer. Any progress on plumbing? Still waiting to hear back on bulb.

Well randy the plumbing is finally finished our refug is in place. The effluent water now passes through the filters on the right-hand side of the sump I removed the influent pipe and filter for the pic. You can also notice the mineral mud in the left chamber it is approximately 5 inches deep
Waiting for the light to arrives and then I get the off shore sand and fill the refug and let it settle for a day

Excellent Joe! Did you ever decide? Are you going plenum/sand or just sand on the right side?

Sounds good, let me know what you find out
. While looking through Delbeek and Sprung's The Reef Aquarium (vol. 3), I found it interesting that they stated, "Toonen and Wee (2005) found no significant difference between nitrogenous waste levels in tank with and without a plenum, regardless of depth, sediment size, or animal load (no animal vs. animal treatments). Don't know if you have this series/volume or not ~ just picked this one up myself.

Randy my very good friend I am aware of the study you reference. Julian Sprung a frequent visitor to the salt water club I belong to has this to say about plenum vs. no plenum. He has stated His experience leads him to believe that in regard to detritus accumulation in both systems that the difference is significant between the two. And the long-term efficiency of the sand bed for both nitrification and denitrification may be more stable when a plenum is used.
Your turn

Well Joe, you know my position in regard to the plenum. While I don't use a true plenum, I do use something plenum-like, and I've been very pleased with the stability of my system. Can't say I'm please with my calcium level in my home reef right now (although I think that has more to do with the salt I used, rather than the "plenum." Just curious as to what your final decision is?

Well considering I will not be putting any algae in our refug until I get the light I went out and procured some good old gulf of Mexico sand and I have to tell you in about 3 lbs of sand I have 50 small clams which I picked out and put back in the ocean saving 15 for the refug. The refuge is starting to clear up after adding water most of the silt coming from the mud. I have a slight layer of sand over the mud but I think that is beneficial in seeding I will also dose with prime. I will start the system late tomorrow and check for any stirring of sand or mud. I must say I think the non plenum way is a easier way to go

Ok Randy my partner in crime there is where we stand. I put 1-½ jars of mineral mud in one side and a good amount of sand in the other. After 24 hrs the refug cleared and I started to play with the flow. One hr later I was still cursing like crazy. First problem was the effluent into the right side of the sump the water would not pass through the filter material fast enough and would back up and over flow the refug. When I slowed down the influent I would trap air in the line and stop the flow to the refug. So I went back to effluent into the right side of the sump unimpeded. After much tweeting I have a good flow through our refug and no sand or mud stir up. This morning I checked the depth again of the mud and sand. After settling I had 3 ½ inches of mud and 2 inches of sand. Back to the beach, more sand. I just go finished picking our 35 baby clams and the two guys you see in my other post. I shut the refug down put the mud in a small Tupper wear container and put that in the bottom of the refug opened it and dumped the mud in. same with the sand. It’s starting to clear up.
I decided to go with this light
24"130Includes a 21" 65 wattActinic & a 21" 65 watt10,000°K bulb(Straight pin base)
What do you think it will be here the 26th?
