I guess it is time for an update...Santa was good to me....I have upgraded my lights to coralife PC's with lunar lights (LED), added two (2) Koralia 1 PH and a UV sterilizer...whew!....then I began adding some corals. In addition, I have also added a new fish...a small sailfin tang. I am sure it will outgrow the tank, but I will enjoy him for awhile....below are some pics. I took one of the left and right side of the tank so you could better see my coral additions...just all small frags. This hobby is definitely addictive...

Thanks...I have spoken with some local reefers and they have offered to help me frag some of them. I have never done that before, so it would be helpful to have someone experienced to help out the first time. I really like the corals now that I have ventured into that chapter of saltwater tanks. Here is a list of the corals I have in my tank at this point:
purple mushrooms
metallic green mushroom
blue mushroom
green ricordia
waving xenia
anthelia
some other type of xenia (rookie doesn't really know)
neon green candy cane
mint green candy cane
tree coral
orange zoas
green star polyps

With a small Frag donation to their fishtank I'm sure,
Your tank looks great!

I am beginning to really like this hobby....Here is another update of a few more corals that were just recently added to my tank. For anyone with a fish only tank, going to corals is a great next step.
In addition, my son has been asking to convert his 20G to saltwater. I caved this week-end. I see no problems since I am already doing the work on my tank. I also attached a pic of his tank...may need a seperate thread for his tank. He just wanted a tank for a pair of maroon clowns.

Thanks on the tank and yes...I need to do something about the shrooms....since I got my new lights, they have really taken off. I have a friend who is going to help me frag them and I am going to share with some local folks.

My current stock is as follows:
Fish

1 coral beauty
2 false percs
1 royal gramma
1 yellowtail damsel
4 green chromis
1 yellow watchman goby
1 lyretail anthias (female)
1 sailfin tang
Inverts

1 cleaner shrimp (more than doubled in size since I got him)
5 scarlet leg hermits
3 blue leg hermits
1 emerald crab
1 hawaiian zebra hermit
3 large astrea snails
2 nass snails (have not seen in a while)
2 featherdusters
Corals

purple mushrooms
metallic green mushroom
blue mushroom
green ricordia
waving xenia
anthelia
some other type of xenia (rookie doesn't really know)
neon green candy cane (2)
mint green candy cane
tree coral
orange zoas
green star polyps
yellow torch
a small leather frag
I am planning on taking the green chromis out at some point...a concern of overcrowding, but everyone seems cool right now. The sailfin is small and will eventually outgrow the tank, but I am hoping to scale up as he grows
My water conditions are good and I change out about 8 gallons avery other week.

Well, its been just over 5 months since I converted my tank and I thought I would post some pics for comparison. Things have progressed well.

One of my tank just after cycling....and one from last week.

I think I can honestly say we have caught the saltwater bug in my family. My son's tank finished cycling and we have added a clean-up crew and some fish. He is enjoying his tank and has been quite picky with his fish selection. He bought a blue & gold damsel and a pair of maroons (we think they are gold striped). He thought the blue & gold was unusual for a damsel and the clowns are really nice.....cool mis-bars. Here are some updated pictures. we like the last picture of maroon #2..enjoy!

You have a definite ability to build a beautiful tank, and it is good to see you are passing on your knowledge to your son. Very nice damsel and the clowns a gorgeous.

thank you for your kind words. I have been into this a little over 5 months and it has been fun. I have had a few minor crisis, but has been fun learning what works well. It definitely takes more time than a fresh water tank, but to me, the rewards are greater. It certainly makes me want to set up a larger tank. I have contemplated how I would make such a move and keep all the rock, inverts, corals and fish alive without shocking a bigger tank. You can only move so much water. I figured I would have to cycle with more rock and then just add what I have on top of it. I would be afraid of losing my corals. oh well that is not the only concern.....it does require a little more cash too....ok...a lot more if I go to a 150 or 180...

My son has done a great job and has become more involved. He watches my tank for me if I am away for work. He will top it off, feed them and do a general inspection. He knows how to test the water and mix fresh water when needed. good helper!
