depending on the tank, the room it's in, and season: now they run between 72-76, in the summer a bit warmer around 78-84.
That degree swing doesn't bother anything?
Just curious, because we're moving and I don't have a chiller at the moment and am trying to way my options on whether or not I'm going to need one in the new house.

79-80. I was down to 75.. my heater was crappy I think. I had it all the way up and never really got above 77.. my mushrooms were closed up so I got a new heater, been keeping the water at about 80 and everything is WIDE open!

no. No heaters in the tanks. What ever the house temp is at, the tanks are a few degrees within that. Cooler in the winter, a bit warmer in the summer due to the lights (PC). Each tank doesn't vary that much, maybe a couple of degrees from the time the lights turn on,to the time they turn off. My nano is the warmest on average, while my 55-gal. by a window is the coolest. The temp swings don't seem to bother my fish or corals. No chiller either, again, my lights are pc, and the tanks are open topped.

76 to 78 in my 92 reef & 75 in my 140 (not stocked yet) I just moved my tanks to the main room in my house. I have been thinking of moving up the temp to 80. I am just a little nervous not knowing the room temp swing yet. (with all the cold weather we have been having)

Thanks ... I think I'm going to have more of an issue. My 155 has halides which run WAY hotter than PC lights. Guess I'll have to play it by ear. Chillers are easy enough to make if I really need one.

I know, I know. I thought my husband was nuts when he told me this. But a ton of people on a local reef forum build their own, we looked into it and it's really not that bad and far cheaper. Luckily my husband is very handy, so that puts my mind more at ease.

I would experiments with evaporating extra water using fans before you take the plunge into chillers.

Oh, trust me, if I can get away without the chiller, I will. I'm not going to buy one until all else fails. I'll float a frozen 2L bottle of water in the sump if I have to, LOL

Set at 78 and may go up to 79-80 when the halides are on. Why? I don't use a chiller and that is where the tank stabilizes in the summer. Same temp 24/7/365.
I have no idea what is right but this temp works for me.

I keep my 180 mixed reef at 80 deg. I had a heater Sh@# the bed and temps droped to around 72. The temp drop bleached a frag piece of SPS. Tempature swings will effect your coral for sure. If you have tangs they like it hot for the most part, 80-84 deg and my tank is filled with tangs. 80 seems to be the magic number for me.

Just purchased 2-300 watt Marineland Stealth Pro Heaters for my 125 and put them in the 40 gallon sump/fuge.
I set them both at 80 and my temp stays at 80.1 with the lights on and 79.6 with the lights off.
