Question and Request

Sorry everyone, I've been very very busy the last few days. I'm moving to San Francisco. I don't think I'm going to be able to set up a tank in the first weeks there so I'm probably going to have to sell everything off. Very bummed, but I don't want the fish to die because I'm being selfish. So, with that being said, I will more than likely be taking a few years off from salt water fish which really REALLY bums me out! I'll keep everyone updated as the days go on.

The move is exciting but sad that you can't keep your fish. Maybe once you get settled you could find something small and inexpensive in CA to keep your toes wet. I took mine down for a few years and really missed it. I wish I would have known about the biocubes because they are easy to maintain, easy to move, and doesn't cost a fortune (esp. now with Craigslist). It might be acceptable until you are in a permant location and have the money to invest in the set up you want. Good luck with everything and keep us posted.

I'm actually doing everything I can right now to avoid from giving away my three most treasured fish (two clowns, one blenny). They were my first three that I've had. I'm working on ANY possible way right now to get them out there with them. I'm looking at getting either a 20 or 30 gallon tank and putting the already cycled water into the tank and leave it bare for the time being. Then when I get the chance to set up another tank I'll put rock and sand in and let the other tank cycle while I have the other fish in the tank that is currently bare without anything in it. Sound possible? The only hiccup in this plan will be the long drive... I don't know if it'll be possible to get them from A to B.

Well Here in California, you can always go to the coast and get as many gallons of water that you can carry! Where in Cali are you moving to. I'm in Sacramento and my LFS sells water with salt already mixed that they use for their tanks. Only a couple of cents a gallon, which i use for water changes. I lived in a couple appartments here in Nor Cal and never in the contract were there any regulations on tanks.
If your having anything bigger that 55g I recomend 1st Floor, just to be safe and hassle from moving a big tank upstairs.
GOOD LUCK HERE IN CALI

Ok, so here is my plan... I need to find someone that is willing to help me out. There are three fish I am refusing to get rid of. I also have a frogspawn and a large amount of GSP that I would REALLY prefer not to get rid of. So, this is where SOMEONE comes into play... who it is I'm not sure yet that's for YOU to decide!
.
Onto the plan -
I'd like to ship someone (someone that is EXPERIENCED and can assure me that they will do the best they can to make sure my fish/corals will be ok) my fish and corals. What their job would be is to hold onto the fish until I can get situated. I am purchasing a 14 gallon or maybe in the 20's gallon Nano tank that will start with live rock and live sand which would only need about 4 days to cycle (or I would hope so). After that has cycled then one of the weekends I would drive to pick up the fish and coral and make the move from your place to mine.
This would be EXTREMELY appreciated and I would of course pay for the shipping and provide a bit of additional money since they will be requiring food, and whatever else it may be. But if anyone would be willing to do this please let me know.
Again, it'll be in the San Fran area.

Sparty...what kind of fish and what size? If you gave the fish to someone you are also asking them to tear down the rockwork to return them to you. My 90g is almost empty and I haven't purchased the replacement fish....but messing with the rocks gives me pause...The corals are an easy babysit.
Also we would have to ship everything...I am not in your area...I'm in Illinois.

Fish are two clowns, and one blenny. I didn't think about the fact that you'd have to tear down the rock work. I didn't think about that because the clowns will be by far the easiest to catch. They are very trustworthy and will let you grab them willingly with a net. I had them in a 150 gallon and they were out the first day I wanted to take them out. The blenny on the other hand is a bit of a pain. I intended on getting him out a few months back but gave up after I couldn't catch him because he squirms between rock work. All three fish are still rather small. One clown is 1" probably... the other is about 2". Blenny I would say in length is about 2"... but still very small. I don't want to over crowd my (future) nano tank but I'm considering on keeping my tuxedo urchin, but I also don't think there would be enough Algae for him to survive in a new tank.

Sparty, I could house them for you, but I would have to ship them back to you since we live on opposite ends of the country.

Thanks to the both of you so far for offering. I might have to take one of you up on that depending on who else chimes in. I'm really looking to avoid paying for shipping twice. It would be something that I would be willing to do ultimately. But, if someone in the northern Cali area would be willing to house them I would be much happier with that option. But I will keep both you and Flower in mind. Thank you both!

Sparty....I have to take my offer off the table, I already have two perc clowns and they would fight. I checked the compatability chart for the seahorses, and they can't be with them either. I'm sorry, but that's why I had to ask what fish you had....I hope you find someone who can help.

Ok, no worries Flower. Thank you for the offer, it was very kind of you! Anyone here have any thoughts or have any room for some little fishies? :)

Sparty you may want to call around to some local fish stores in the area where you are going. Many of them are willing to baby sit livestock for a small price. I know at least one of the lfs's down here does. Maybe look into some of the local forums in that area and ask some of those folks if they know a good reputable one. With that being said though my only concern is that this is a tough time of the year to be shipping livestock clear across the country. Would hate to see you go through all of this work and not end up happy in the end. Maybe someone here can give you some tips on how to prepare your stuff for shipping. If you do find someone that is.

Well, I am in the process of buying a Biocube... would you think it would be somewhat possible to transport the fish and have the running on a car/outlet converter for a few days? I'd have to move it back and forth from car to hotel along the way... but if I bought a 14 gallon do you think it would be doable?

I would take them, I stay in Sacramento, Only about an hour away from Frisco, But I only have a 29g and already have 2 percs in it? Not sure how compatible are they?

So, I'm about two seconds away from deciding to purchase a 14 gallon biocube. I'm assuming I would be able to fit the three fish in there comfortably for quite some time (correct me if I'm wrong, but one clown is 2" another clown at about 1", and a blenny at close to 3" long). Anyway, would it be possible that if I were to keep the tank in a stable location in the car where it will sit perfectly still that I would be able to hook it up to a plug inverter allowing it to plug in using the cars power? Or is that a biocube too powerful? I've been trying to find specs on it for about an hour or so with no luck, but I know I can plug two laptops into the car plug inverter so I figured a 14 gallon tank it wouldn't take MUCH power... what do you think? I also figured since it's small enough I could carry it from point A to point B. Meaning I would be able to keep it in my car during the drive, and then transfer into the hotel room during the night over... thoughts?

I think the issue would be keeping the water relatively stable and cool. Might be better served transporting them in a cooler and maybe just drop some small zip lock baggies of ice cubes in every once in a while if need be while in the car. But yeah I think it could be done get the inverter to run a air pump or small power head. No mandarin anymore?

Hmmm, that's a thought. The only thing is when I get there I won't have a tank. So I figuerd I would just keep it like it is right now and just use it for the time I'm there without a tank. No, the mandarin is gone. I sold him to my LFS for $6 (rip off). But I wasn't able to haggle or anything with them because he was starving and I didn't want him to end up dying. Fortunately the LFS guy said he's seen mandarins WAAAY worse and he looked like he was still in pretty decent shape... not great though.
