Question and Request

No, :(. I don't have a tank setup there, and if I leave them behind the person here wouldn't know what in the world to do. I feel the most comfortable holding and caring for them rather than someone else that doesn't know everything about the hobby.

Hmmm, that's a thought. The only thing is when I get there I won't have a tank. So I figuerd I would just keep it like it is right now and just use it for the time I'm there without a tank. No, the mandarin is gone. I sold him to my LFS for $6 (rip off). But I wasn't able to haggle or anything with them because he was starving and I didn't want him to end up dying. Fortunately the LFS guy said he's seen mandarins WAAAY worse and he looked like he was still in pretty decent shape... not great though.
If you had a decent sized cooler you could transport with some of the rock pieces in there for the bacteria and it would be like transporting a tank. Just have to make sure the rock doesn't slide around and crush the fish.

So, I'm about two seconds away from deciding to purchase a 14 gallon biocube. I'm assuming I would be able to fit the three fish in there comfortably for quite some time (correct me if I'm wrong, but one clown is 2" another clown at about 1", and a blenny at close to 3" long). Anyway, would it be possible that if I were to keep the tank in a stable location in the car where it will sit perfectly still that I would be able to hook it up to a plug inverter allowing it to plug in using the cars power? Or is that a biocube too powerful? I've been trying to find specs on it for about an hour or so with no luck, but I know I can plug two laptops into the car plug inverter so I figured a 14 gallon tank it wouldn't take MUCH power... what do you think? I also figured since it's small enough I could carry it from point A to point B. Meaning I would be able to keep it in my car during the drive, and then transfer into the hotel room during the night over... thoughts?
I'm not sure on the power specs. I would be concerned about carrying the tank. I have a 16 gallon and it weighed close to 200 lbs.. I would not want to have to be moving a tank that heavy multiple times.
I would have concerns running the tank on a power inverter while driving. It could put unnecessary strain on the battery/alternator. I used to deliver pizza and would have to light my car topper with my cigarette lighter. Well, I blew through 2 alternators and 1 battery doing this in 2 years. I'm very paranoid about powering anything using my cigarette lighter.

When we took the stingray to the aquarium in Jenks, OK....we carried it in a large cooler with wheels, and used an inverter to run a PH and a heater.....BUT that was only for 3 hours....by the time we got there the ph was way low
I would be very nervous of fluctuating parameters.....

L.A. to Detroit took us about 5 days when we moved driving 8-9 hours a day. If he pushes it he could probably do it in 3 long days.
Honestly Sparty, if you really want the best for these fish I think the best thing to do is find a good home for them locally where you are. No matter what you do transporting them that far is going to be risky. The move is going to be stressful enough without having to worry about the fish.

I might look into the babysitting thing for a bit and see if that's a possibility. If that's not possible I'll look at a few other situations and see if something allows for me to keep them. Maybe I could give them to someone here in MI that is a professional in the hobby and have them ship it out to me once I have everything set up in Cali (I would pay the shipping of course as well as any other costs). Spanko? Your name comes to mind :).

Well, for everyone I'll give a quick update... I ended up doing as everyone had suggested... I gave them to my LFS. It was extremely hard, but taking the chance on killing them in a shipment wasn't something I was willing to do. However, I must admit... I am very heart broken :(... I miss looking at my fish and probably will be a bit upset about all of this for at least a few days... both of my tanks are empty and the feeling is like looking at your dog's cage or bed after he is no longer there... I just want to get rid of my tanks for the time being until I can start back up with this when I move back to MI... until then... I will be fairly infrequent with this site, but will be chiming in every so often when there is a question I can answer. On the plus side... I ended up getting close to $400 for all my rock/coral/fish... which I think I only paid around $300 for all of it. So I am very excited for when I start this hobby back up!
One quick question so I have something to think about... Where can I get rock that has already been boiled and fully dead? Is it fairly cheap? I ask this because I don't want to spend the whole $7-$10/lbs for rock. If I can get dead and then have it back to life that'll be my best option I think... I don't mind the cycle as I did it once before and it wasn't much of a hassle.

If all you wanted was dead rock....why did you get rid of yours? I understand selling the fish and coral....but everything else you could put in storage and reuse it..including the rock. Any LFS sells the dry rock for about $3.99 a pound.

Because I didn't have room for it. It was going to be a pain in the BEHIND (Sorry I didn't know the mods were on a powertrip right now) so I just had to get rid of it. Of course again, I'm not looking to use it right now or any time in the near future. I did some research last night and found out the term is actually called dry rock. Found it at a few places for pretty cheap so I think I might go that route.

sorry Sparty...... I know this must really ****** ******* suck for you to have to surrender your fish friends. I can't imagine what your going through. Just think of the NEW possibilities when you get your system up again. I see a new thread build in your forcast live from Cally!!

Hey Sparty I hope you wern't mad about my question.....I hate to think I drove you to the dark side, and got you yelled at by red letter. I wrapped my rock in newspaper and stored it in the fish tank....I stored almost all of my stuff in the fish tank. I moved the tank empty...then filled it with fish stuff in the basement. It doesn't matter really, what's done is done. Dry rock, dead rock..it's all the same. Have a safe move and then come back on and start up your tank again.

Flower- Sorry, I didn't mean to come off as if I was snapping at you. I've been short with many people the last few weeks since I've been trying to get everything situated. The main reason I can't keep the rock is because I'm placing it in a storage unit, so I can't just leave that stuff in there for a year or two. Anyway, don't think I was snapping at you, just a bit testy recently.
PS - The mod that took off my "Cuss" word. Get off your powertrip. I have a feeling I know who it was anyway.

I am the one who edited it. This is a site that is owned by a store they give us the boards to help us out and they have ask certain things not be done.
I would rather edit out tell you why rather then close or delete the thread. I am not on a power trip and have been on this site for a very very long time. since 2002 and the rules they ask us to follow have not changed this is a family site hence no cussing! this is a buisness hence no linking sorry if you do not like them.
